Newspaper Releases More Surveillance Footage From Parkland Shooting (Video)

A local newspaper in Southern Florida obtained new surveillance footage this week captured during the Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The Sun Sentinel published approximately 36 minutes of film Thursday depicting confusion and chaos as students evacuate campus and officers struggle to locate the admitted gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, after he’s murdered 17 students and staff inside the 1200 Building.

Delayed security footage left responding officers confused as to Cruz’s exact whereabouts, according to the newspaper, allowing him to escape to a nearby store, leaving his AR-15 abandoned inside the school.

The new information, however, does little to shed light on the Broward County Sheriff’s Department’s botched response — except to show a new angle of Deputy Scot Peterson idling outside, doing nothing.

“I want all the information to come out as quickly and thoroughly as possible so that everyone can make informed decisions moving forward,” Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine told the newspaper. “I believe in full transparency and complete information — anything besides that is a disservice to the community.”

A Broward County Circuit judge approved the release of the video in April. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision last month.

“It’s a sad commentary on our times that there must be a full and open public discussion about the type of security system that is appropriate for a large public high school and the appropriate law enforcement response to an active shooter on a high school campus,” Judge Robert Gross wrote in the opinion. “Parents have such a high stake in the ultimate decisions that they must have access to camera video footage here at issue,” he added, “and not blindly rely on School Board experts to make decisions for them.”
