More Evidence of Native American Serpent Worship

Hi Steve,

I came across some information yesterday that I wanted to share with you. I currently live near Mobile, Alabama and yesterday went on a duck boat tour with my family. While waiting for our departure I visited a small museum where I saw, well this:

Meet Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville (1680-1767), one of Mobile’s founding fathers and later a repeat governor of French Louisiana. To better to mix and mingle with the natives and to show that he appreciated their traditions he received many serpent tattoos. The depiction in the statue above is said to be conservative as Bienville was probably totally covered in the tattoos.

On the building across the street is a replica of Bienville’s disc tattoo:

My photo is fuzzy but in the middle of the hand that is encircled by the serpents is an all seeing eye, which is also on the belly of the statue above. There are serpents depicted in art in various places around the city including a colorful one going up a telephone poll. (I wasn’t fast enough and failed to get a picture.)

A local artist collective goes by the name The Serpents of Bienville.

Anyway I though you’d be interested if you hadn’t heard this story.
