Is It Open Season On Christians?

Whether it is or is not open season on Christians 24/7 is a timeless question because each generation has to answer for itself the import of the following words from Matthew 5:39KJV:

“…resist not evil…”

Are you the kind of person who thinks the only good Christian is a dead Christian? If so, Matthew 5:39 (“…resist not evil….”) is one of your favorite verses. If “resist not evil” was carried out your way to the logical conclusion all good Christians would soon be penniless, homeless, battered and dead. There is always someone willing to enter an unlocked home with no person inside willing to resist evil. By the way, what is your home address? Are you resistant to provide that information? Hummm? Are you sure you really believe that you are sinning when you resist evil? Either you have not thought the ramifications of your position through or you are a hypocrite.

In your view, God sinned when he told the Jewish people to go to war, Jesus became a sinner when he resisted the Pharisees, James is not only a sinner but preached sinning as proper when he wrote “resist the devil…”, David was a great sinner when he resisted the giant, cut off his head and paraded around the country side with head in hand and praises of victory in his successful resistance to evil. Added to this, I cannot image your ilk when you read that in the Bible that Christians are “soldiers” and a soldier’s job is to resist and over power the enemy.

In Jesus’ day, in Jewish culture, it was an insult for a man to touch another man’s face. A touch on the face, for Jews then and for many even today, has sexual overtones/implications. Think of it this way; if a man approached your wife or teenage daughter and stroked her cheek with his hand, what would you think of that action? You might be tempted to quickly remove his hand and say, “Keep your hands to yourself.”

Jesus intensified the insult from a touch to a slap. In some cultures, when a man slaps another man in the face with open hand, that is the ultimate insult. In some cultures, one of the two will die!

What Jesus was saying was do not be quick to judge the actions of another person as an intended personal insult. Give him another chance without him asking for it; turn the other cheek and see if the insult was intended. I have made a lot of mistakes in my personal relationships that caused insult. I did not intend insult, it just happened. Sometimes, I caught the insult quickly and asked forgiveness. Sometimes, it took me a while to identify my insult and I asked forgiveness late. Sometimes, I insulted and did not know I insulted a person until it was brought to my attention. I am sure I have insulted some people who never shared with me the pain of my insult and I have yet to know about it or realize it. Praise God for my friends who are not easily insulted and who make excuses for me to themselves.

Sometimes people do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, look the wrong way and act the wrong way not because they have calculated evil towards you but because they are just ignorant of how their words, look or actions are interpreted by you.

Unless you are absolutely sure the person intended insult, cut them some slack. That is what “resist not evil” means. Go another mile with them, turn the other cheek, give a little extra and do not wear your feelings on your sleeve. Grow up. Be an adult. Be more tolerant. Give yourself an excuse for the behavior of the other person. If there is any doubt, give the other person the benefit of the doubt. Yes, they did you wrong (evil). Let it pass! Guess what! You are not the center of the universe. Neither am I.

You can tell them how they hurt your feelings or how their actions cost you something. If they respond with surprise, embarrassment or bewilderment, that is evidence they never intended insult and/or injury. If they respond with a who cares attitude, get away from that person and stay away; find another friend to take their place. You only have enough time and room in your life for five good friends, maximum That person is not one of them. Problem solved.

“Resist not evil” does not mean you can be killed by anyone who wants you dead. It means do not be paranoid. Anytime your view of the Word of God and adherence to that view makes you act or talk like an idiot, think again. http://biblecenter.de/bibel/cbc/resist.php
