Hey Bug Eaters And Non-Bug Eaters… Is Chitin Bad For Us Or What? Many Conflicting Stories Out There!!

Chitin… a component of that outer shell of insects and shellfish is a recent source of controversy.  Some sources say it is bad, and some sources say it is good.

1. What is chitin?

Chitin is the exoskeleton of most arthropods - insects, spiders, and crustaceans Pronounced: kītin Insects do not have an internal skeleton. Their exoskeleton, which is rigid and holds their body together, is made of chitin. Because it is rigid and hard, insects must shed their exoskeletons as they grow since it does not grow with them.

4. Now… here are my thoughts… I eat lots of chitin… almost everyday in fact, because I eat shrimp almost every… single… day.  

I can say this with 100% confidence… as a food scientist, I do monitor what I eat and it’s effects on the body… and I can say with great certainty, usually eating the entire body of the shimp (minus the head), that I have NEVER experienced any issues with my digestion or health doing this.  No bloating, no cramping… no gas… no issues with expulsion… no odd smells from my feces… no explosive, or watery diarrhea… no constipation.

No excess poisoning of heavy metals that I’m aware of from regularly eating shrimp and seafood. 

But what I have experienced are great health benefits… for you must understand… I’m getting the omega-3′s from shellfish eating… and zinc… and both of those are not highly available in meat sources. 

I feel better than ever, now that I’ve stopped eating so much meat as I did in the past, and moved over my main protein source, to fish and shellfish.  

5.  Granted… if heavy metal is an issue for eating as much seafood as I do… it is minimized because I personally do a clay and baking soda detox every single day.  I’ll explain more of how to do that later.   

Conclusion:  I know many say that chitin is indigestible but that might be true, if that is all that someone eats.  I eat my shellfish with other foods… and so maybe there is something in those other foods that helps to digest chitin.  The fact remains, I have NEVER experienced any health problems from eating shrimp, and only experience massive benefits… benefits that aren’t available in other foods.
