The following report was written on Dec 20th by a colleague of mine who was directly impacted from the recent M 6.4 earthquake that struck near his hometown in Arcata, California.

The worst here in Arcata was the major messes inside homes and businesses with items tossed about like a bomb had hit nearby. Then heat and power out all day.
Word from Blue Lake Rancheria (which is all solar powered) was that the Bear River Rancheria Casino and Hotel had to be evacuated about 2:30 a.m. when the quake hit. Good thing – as later today the hotel tower was so badly damaged they reported some partial collapse later today.
There was some infrastructure damage in various places that all sources were working on throughout the day. But tonight, as the Cal Poly Humboldt (Jolly Giant) Commons was closing, there was a rain starting after 8 days of freezing ice temperatures, and power was coming back on in blocks around Arcata.
Got home while still dark, and only about 8 minutes later much to my surprise power came back on, along with the furnace heat not even having to relight it. Also a good surprise was my whole home network came back up without having to reset the router, switches, etc. – which is a first after an outage. Last word after water being at a trickle this morning was to boil the water, but perhaps that will be clearing now too.
