Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman started Weird N.J. as a newsletter in 1989 before making it a magazine in 1992. The publication became a repository for all the wonderfully quirky and offbeat local legends in the state and a kind of alternative travel guide.

Abandoned institutions, macabre gateways, tunnels, sewers, and other sites of popular curiosity were explored, with dispatches coming in from all corners of the Garden State.

The magazine is published twice a year. Its upcoming fall/winter issue is its 59th.

Bloomfield’s Sceurman and Livingston’s Moran have also published Weird N.J. books, hosted the series “Weird U.S.” on the History Channel in 2005 and the Travel Channel series “Paranormal Caught on Camera” in 2019 and 2020.

This upcoming Sony series — Valla is writing the pilot and Kaufmann is producing — will use the New Jersey stories from the magazine and real Jersey places in combination with original characters.
