Interview with Aricson Pereira: Driving Innovation in Robotic Surgery and Healthcare Manufacturing
Renowned chemical engineer Aricson Pereira has a record of stellar healthcare manufacturing and material advancements. An unrelenting quest for perfection has defined his career, and his contributions to advanced technologies and healthcare manufacturing have been much felt. Aricson started his path in India, where he grew deeply committed to changing the world and passionate about engineering. His early employment experiences and academic successes set the groundwork for his success. Let’s examine Aricson’s remarkable achievements and learn more about his future vision.
Could you kindly share your history and the path that resulted in an engineering career?
Aricson: The way things operate and the ability of technology to address challenges constantly captivate me. Growing up in Mumbai, India’s suburbs, I found great fascination in the subtleties of life and the possibilities technology presented to solve practical problems. I was always motivated to leave behind the effort toward universal access to clean air and water and affordable healthcare. This obsession, combined with a solid scientific and mathematical background, inevitably drove me toward a job in chemical engineering. I completed my engineering studies in India and moved to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, USA, with a fully funded scholarship to work on material science research. I gained much knowledge, completed my thesis, and published articles. I wanted to apply my understanding somewhere I could positively impact individuals’ lives. I chose healthcare, Particularly in manufacturing and healthcare, which allowed me to use my knowledge of Chemical Engineering and Material Science to create a tangible impact on the world.
Q: You’ve had a significant impact on healthcare manufacturing. Can you share some highlights?
Aricson: Definitely. Although I oversaw over fifty initiatives, I feel few are worthy of discussion since society values a sense of accomplishment. Leading the “Make in India” project and building a manufacturing facility for tuberculosis diagnosis kits made me honored at Cepheid. Along with providing low-income people in India, a global hotspot for tuberculosis, and access to vital healthcare resources, this project created notable income generation for a company based in India. All the advanced manufacturing equipment and raw materials are manufactured in the USA and are making a lot of employment in the manufacturing domain. I also significantly helped to quickly increase the manufacturing of PCR test kits throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To satisfy the immediate worldwide need for diagnostic instruments and PCR test kits, I led the optimization of manufacturing processes by using advanced material selection and applied creative ideas. It led to a significant increase in throughput from the same manufacturing lines. Participating in the fight against the pandemic in such a direct manner was immensely satisfying.
Q: Your current work at Procept Biorobotics involves cutting-edge technology. Can you tell us more about that?
Aricson: Leading the creation of next-generation robotic surgery equipment, I am in front of a medical technology revolution at Procept Biorobotics, where Waterjet treats enlarged prostate in men with minimum invasion surgeries. My main goal is to make instruments needed for patented Aquablation technology, a novel approach for enlarged prostate problems, more manufacturable. At Procept, I launch new products, taking designs from R&D and developing unique processes and equipment to make them manufacturable. After proving the manufacturability, I qualify the lines to ensure the product is built with consistency and safe for the patient. Through my expertise in material science and manufacturing techniques, I am helping robotic surgery in a sector ready for explosive expansion to advance. This technology offers less intrusive treatments with great results, therefore transforming healthcare. The excellent 4X global market projection shows robotic surgery’s enormous potential over the following years. It will create many new employment opportunities and bring in new investments in the field.
At Procept, my job goes beyond just technological innovation to include bettering lives. We are enabling a paradigm change in prostate treatment by improving the manufacturability of these robotic tools, hence increasing their availability to patients all around.
Q: You’ve also made notable contributions to research and sustainability. Can you elaborate on that aspect of your work?
Aricson: My studies and dedication to sustainability affect others all around. My published works in high-impact journals with impact factors above 23 focus on essential concerns such as sustainable waste management and air pollution control. These initiatives help to solve urgent environmental issues worldwide. I also publish articles on manufacturing based on what I have learned in healthcare manufacturing environments where knowledge sharing and publishing are rare. Since proprietary processes often limit knowledge sharing in this field, I present my insights at conferences to contribute to the industry’s collective knowledge. Apart from my studies; I am committed to raising the following engineering generation. As a mentor, I help budding experts by sharing my knowledge and experience to motivate and help define their paths. Furthermore, my participation in peer review guarantees that the best standards of scientific inquiry are kept.
Combining my research, mentoring, and fieldwork contributions will help me actively build a more sustainable future and advance the field for future generations. My efforts will help me have a more significant worldwide influence than my successes.
Q: What motivates you to go above and beyond in your field?
Aricson: My primary drive comes from a strong need to change the planet. Being an engineer gives me a unique chance to apply knowledge and abilities to solve significant problems and bring about good change. Knowing that my work directly affects people’s lives and the health of our world makes me very happy. Whether creating life-saving medical gadgets, streamlining manufacturing techniques, or doing environmental studies, a feeling of purpose and a need to help something more than myself motivates me. Observing the concrete outcomes of my work feeds my enthusiasm and inspires me to challenge limits. Furthermore, the engineering sector’s ongoing challenge and chance for innovation keep me interested and enthusiastic about what I do.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring engineers?
Aricson: Aspiring engineers should welcome inquiry, develop a love of solving problems, and never stop learning. Being current with new technology and approaches is crucial in the always-changing engineering world. Most importantly, remember that engineering is about harnessing those technical abilities to build a better future for humanity, not only about technical ability.
