Orangutan Granted 'Basic' Human Rights

A 20-year old orangutan in Buenos Aries named, Sandra, has been granted basic rights by the Argentina courts. Born in Germany, Sandra has lived in Buenos Aires in captivity most of her life.
According to the official judicial news agency as reported by the Associated Press (AP),
“Following a dynamic … judicial interpretation, it is necessary to recognize that the animal is subject to rights, and should be protected.”
The orangutan’s attorney, Andres Gil Dominguez, says this is an ‘unprecendented’ decision and willpave the road for Sandra’s eventual realese from captivity.
