AKC Announces Obedience Rule Changes for Dogs with Special Needs

July 1, 2025 - The American Kennel Club (AKC) has finalized landmark updates to its obedience trial regulations, permanently expanding access for dogs with disabilities and special needs. Effective July 1, 2025, three-legged (tripod) dogs, deaf dogs, and others with physical challenges will be eligible to compete in non-jumping obedience and rally classes, marking a major step toward inclusivity in competitive dog sports.

Key Changes to Obedience Regulations

  1. Tripod Dogs Now Eligible Permanently
Following a successful 24-month pilot program, three-legged dogs will be allowed to compete in all non-jumping obedience and rally classes. Previously, tripods could only participate under temporary approval, but the AKC Board voted unanimously to make this change permanent.

  2. Deaf Dogs Officially Recognized
Deaf dogs are now explicitly permitted to compete in any obedience trial, provided they follow standard commands via hand signals. The AKC emphasized that deafness does not disqualify a dog from demonstrating obedience skills.

  3. Safety-First Equipment Updates
All high jumps used in trials must transition to displaceable panels by July 2025. These panels detach upon impact, reducing injury risks for dogs with mobility challenges or those still mastering jumps.

  4. Expanded Eligibility for Altered Dogs
Dogs surgically altered due to congenital defects or injuries may compete if spayed/neutered. The AKC also clarified that dogs disfigured by accidents or illnesses remain eligible if the condition doesn’t hinder movement.

Quotes from AKC Leadership

“These changes reflect our commitment to celebrating every dog’s potential,” said AKC Vice President of Sports Services, Carrie DeYoung. “Obedience trials are about partnership and skill-not perfection. Dogs with special needs have always belonged here, and now our rules fully reflect that.”

Community Response

Trainers and handlers praised the updates. Jessica Lin, a competitor with a deaf Border Collie, shared, “This validates the hard work we’ve put in. My dog doesn’t hear commands, but she’s just as capable-and now the rules agree.”

Background

The push for inclusivity gained momentum after the AKC’s 2023 pilot program, which saw tripod dogs excel in novice and utility classes. Meanwhile, advocacy groups highlighted the success of deaf dogs in agility and obedience, urging regulatory parity.

Looking Ahead

The AKC plans to host workshops to help judges and clubs implement the updates. Trials beginning July 1, 2025, will feature revised class structures and updated scoring guidelines to accommodate diverse competitors.

Key Takeaway: The AKC’s rule changes prioritize inclusivity, ensuring dogs with disabilities can showcase their training and strengthen bonds with handlers in competitive settings.
