Swiss trumpet player Markus Breuss and Spanish clarinetist Pelayo Fernandez Arrizabalaga previously had founded the experimental group Clonicos in 1984. They formed the Quintet in 2002, playing mainly free jazz as well free improvisation while inserting musical quotes ranging from be bop to spirituals.

Markus Breuss (Switzerland) and Pelayo Arrizabalaga (Laredo / Spain), with Bagüeste Fair, were the creators Clónicos in 1984: a workshop multisonoro, multiestilística experience and collage composition, following the footsteps of the likes of KH Stockhausen, Edgar Varese, Fred Frith, John Zorn and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Decidedly eclectic and innovative composer, trumpeter and electronics researcher, Markus Breuss is an emblematic figure of creative freedom. He has combined his music in the most remote influences with a drastic revision of popular music from the electronics, collage and chamber compositions, one of the composers and multi-instrumentalist most unique European music scene. He has worked with The Pekenikes, OCQ, Fatima Miranda and Finis Africae, among others. ..
Pelayo F. Arrizabalaga is one of the most prestigious musical avant-garde Madrid. Contemporary music to improvisation, to electronics and free jazz. Throughout his career he has collaborated with other musicians such as Malcolm Goldstein, Llorenç Barber, JAGalicia, Sergi Jorda, etc.. Since 1993 lives in Switzerland, where he studies and is guest composer at the Electronic Music Studio Basel Conservatory, led by Thoma Kessler …

Concert for Kowald was recorded in 2002 and is another excellent work. It is a single live track over 30 minutes long. This is a vastly changing performance going from moody soundscapes to free blowing chaos to fiery latin rhythms. He is well backed by a first-rate group of musicians with pianist Tsukiko Amakawa being especially noteworthy. Arrizabalaga is an artist that deserves wider recognition.

This fantastic, energetic concert of free jazz was performed by the Breuss Arrizabalaga Quintet in Frigiliana, Málagua, Spain on 19 July 2003. (Tracks 9 and 10 were recorded in performance in Madrid.) The concert was released as an album, Nfamoudou-Boudougou, on Hazard Records.
