Hoop Drums by StuART Drums

StuART Drums provides handmade, authentic hoop drums. These are crafted by Stu Braks, the artist of StuART Drums.

Each hoop drum of StuART Drums is hand-crafted and painted by Stu Braks. The hoop drums use real animal hide, with real hard wood hoops. They are then hand painted by Stu Braks with acrylics and then clear coated to provided a protective barrier. The skins of each drum has been treated with pure shea butter as a conditioner. The hoop drums require a lengthy and complex assembly, only capable by a skilled artist, such as Braks. First, the animal skins are soaked and cut and the hardwood hoops are hand-sanded and stained. Everything is then ‘smudged’ with sagebrush smoke as a traditional Native American ceremony to wash away negative thoughts and energy. After this, the drum can be laced with animal skins, and then must dry. They can then be hand-painted. No hoop drum is exactly like the next. These hoop drums are all unique and individual. These hoops drums feature Native American portraits, masks, or designs. The hoop drums can also be custom ordered, with different sizes and custom designs.

Stu Braks, of StuART Drums, is an award-winning artist and drum-maker based in Cave Creek, Arizona. His artwork originates from interests in drumming, the Old West and Native American culture. Stu’s specialty is painting the faces of the old west, currently focusing on a series of Native American portraits. He uses acrylics to paint his subjects both on canvas and on his handmade hoop drums. Stu’s goal is to capture the dignity, character, emotion and spirit of the subjects, and to bring those feelings to the viewer.
