#IBW2013 Alison’s of Tewkesbury

Next week is Independent Booksellers Week.

To celebrate this I am going to try and write about an indie bookshop on my blog every day next week, and also about a book I bought there. But, being an impatient creature ( and also avoiding getting on with what I should be doing) I thought I would start early.

Tewkesbury is a town that puts out the flags, literally. Half timbered in places with a beautiful abbey. And the most amazing bookshop. Alison’s doesn’t appear to have a website which most bookshops do these days. What it does have, which many bookshops do not, is a fantastic poetry section.

So, in passing one day, having checked out the shelves i though it a  safe bet to ask Ian what was the best book he had read recently. Like all good booksellers he went to the shelf, took out a book, put it in my hands. ( First rule of book selling: get book into customer’s hands. You never know, they might buy it.) He wasn’t to know that I am a painter and have an obsession with silence. Or maybe he is, like many booksellers, just a great judge of character? Or a wizard?

Beautiful cover. I bought the book. It lay for a long while in the shelves, not forgotten but waiting, for just the right moment.

About half way through now and it is just wonderful. Beautifully written. Quiet, but brooding. It paints pictures in my mind. It is a peaceful haven to return to through a busy day. Intriguing.

Next time I am passing Tewkesbury I will go in and ask Ian again. “What is the best book you have read recently.”

But for now I am asking you. What is the best book you have read recently, and where did you buy it?( Picture books are allowed, not just novels.)

And if you find yourself in Tewkesbury have a look at this: James Mayhew and orchestra in Tewkesbury Abbey.
