Bringing Innovation to the Materials Used For Creating Breathtaking Sculptures

Pablo Picasso once said, “Sculpture is the art of the intelligence.” Many people believe that sculpting is one of the few art forms you can work on without having any prior skillsets for it. As one of the world’s oldest kinds of an art form, sculpting has been a part of our existence for more than thousands of years – and many of us still honor this unique form of art in the modern-day.

Daniel Myron Droz, also known as Dan Droz, is one of the few revered American interdisciplinary sculptors who has taken on the roles of many different occupations, making him a professional of multiple talents. Over the years, he has become an industrial designer, entrepreneur, educator, and author.

Explaining Sculpture

In simple terms, sculpting is the kind of art form that creates objects by the act of shaping materials in certain ways. These shapes can be carved, where the material is moved from within an object to reveal its form, and then to model is where the artist creates a form via adding materials onto it. It is up to the artist to start the task by conceptualizing a specific subject, choosing the material and size before moving forward with the work to be done on the final piece.

Materials To Begin With

Since sculpting has existed for a long time, many sculptors over the years have adopted many different ways to bring uniqueness and innovation to their sculptors. Some would create their sculptures with metal, wood, glass, stone, clay, etc. However, it has been said that when you are beginning with a sculpting career, you spend a good amount of your time mastering the skills working with clay, which also comes in different types.

He started his own company, Dan Droz Design, which was focused on product design, developing and manufacturing a line of peppermills and housewares distributed by H.E. Lauffer. He has also designed furniture and sold them to various companies in the United States, Taiwan, and Canada.

Simultaneously, Droz has been indulging in sculpting in many different ways. He has a separate studio to make his freestanding and wall sculpture and some works on paper that have been influenced by Constructivism, the Italian Memphis movement, De Stijl, and Ulm Schools, where he brought a distinctive design sensibility to his work. Initially, most of his work was made of wood and something different that would affect the viewer’s movement elements and the naked eyes.

Furthermore, he has also been incorporating many new novel fabrication methods into his work with glass, polymers, and aluminum. In fact, in 2018, he invented a method for folding large aluminum sheets that allow complex forms to be created as tall as 8 ft. and makes use of incorporating reflective and concealed surfaces and optical illusions that captivate the attention to the limits of perception.

Based on his concentration at Harvard, including the History of Science and Visual and Environmental Studies, Droz believes that sculptures serve as an opportunity to create them through experimentation and not see reality as a fixed or commonly held perception.
