The Tragic Last Days of Jack Lord (Steve McGarrett of Hawaii Five-0)

The Tragic Last Days of Jack Lord (Steve McGarrett of Hawaii Five-0) For seven years, starting in 1991, the rugged Jack Lord, known as the rugged Steve McGarret on Hawaii 5-0 was basically non-responsive. His loyal wife would turn his wheelchair to the ocean as he starred blankly at sunrises and sunsets.

After his series ended in 1980, Lord kept a low profile, rarely making public appearances. His final TV appearance was that same year in a failed pilot for a new CBS series called M Station: Hawaii which he also directed. After 1980, he suffers Lord suffered a slow declinefrom Alzheimer’s disease for at least seven years before his death, though some accounts have suggested that he may have had the illness as early as the twelfth season of Hawaii Five-0. He was only in his early sixties. He died of congestive heart failure at his home in Honolulu, on January 21, 1998, at age 77, leaving an estate of $40 million. He was a philanthropist and the entire estate went to Hawaiian charities upon his wife Marie’s death at age 100 in 2005. Here is a wonderful story from his secretary The Jack Lord Only His Secretary Knew

Jack Lord’s character was inspiring. The photographer’s stand-in who would help get the lighting and shade ideal for actual filming by going through the motions Jack Lord would do later was a good friend for years. I gave her an apple pie the last time I saw her. Her and husband Ollie Mitchell, the trumpet player, were two of the least pretentious bu successful people I have yet to meet in Hawaii after 28 years. The world needs more open unpretentious people and fewer parasites and embezzlers ripping off the stock markets, leaving scrap paper in their wake. ‘Unchained Melody’ and ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ both feature Ollie Mitchell on lead trumpet.Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Austin Powers, Love Boat, The Dean Martin Show, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc… Only a few are as clear and inspiring as Jack Lord and these folks.
