The right house plants can make a big difference in the way your home looks. Choosing house plants, though, can be a little bit tricky.

Luckily, there are a few select plants you can focus on if you want to introduce house plants to your home.

In fact, if you keep reading, you’ll discover 10 weird and unusual house plants you can keep in your home, that will impress everyone who sees them.

Let’s begin!

1. Living Stones

As the name suggests, these plants look like stones. More specifically, they look like pebbles. This plant belongs to a group of plants known as ‘succulents.’ This plant comes from southern Africa and is normally found in dry conditions.

If you are going to keep this plant, it helps to keep it in a well-lit area. A windowsill that receives light is an example of such a place. Make sure you do not water this plant too much. It is very sensitive to the amount of water you give it, as it is used to dry conditions.

2. Zig Zag Cactus

The Zig Zag cactus is a cool looking plant that doesn’t look like a normal kind of cactus. This interesting plant will produce pink flowers when the time comes for it to bloom.

Like many other forms of cacti, this plant does not need a lot of maintenance. This makes it a good choice for people who do not trust themselves with plants!

3. Trachyandra

When you first see this plant, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it is from another planet.

The Trachyandra is another plant that can be found in southern Africa. If you are looking for a plant that is relatively low maintenance, this plant is a good idea.

4. Episcia ‘Cleopatra’

This plant has wonderful leaves. Though this plant does produce flowers, unusually, the leaves attract more attention. If you are going to be keeping these plants, make sure you keep them in an area with high humidity.

It’s also worth mentioning that these plants can grow pretty fast and quite large. So, make sure you have enough space, or else your home will start to look like a jungle.

5. Crown of Thorns

Though it has a menacing name, the Crown of Thorns is a delightful plant to look at.

It has flowers that are bright pink and some are also white. When keeping this plant, you need to make sure you keep it near a window that lets in a lot of light.

You also need to make sure you give it a chance to dry, between each watering session. This plant does not like waterlogged soil. If the soil does get too wet, you might start to notice signs of rot setting in.

6. Bird’s Nest Anthurium

If you are after a plant with large leaves, the Bird’s Nest Anthurium is a good plant to go for. This plant has vibrant green leaves that are very large.

The leaves tend to have a waxy texture to them. It’s the kind of plant you have probably seen in the foyer of an office. But it also looks really nice in the home.

When keeping this plant, make sure that you do not let the soil get too wet. Again this could lead to problems associated with rot.

You also need to make sure that you provide the plant with enough light. It doesn’t need to be placed directly in the view of a window. As long as there is light in the room, it should be okay.

7. Baseball Bat Sansevieria

This is a plant that looks like it has come from another world. It is essentially made up of very long leaves that resemble thick stems. The stem effect is created because the leaves ‘roll up.’

This kind of plant needs to be kept in bright conditions. So you might want to think about putting it near a window. You also need to make sure that the soil is allowed to dry out, between each watering session.

8. Gasteria Armstrongii

This is another plant that belongs to the succulent family. This plant is made up of very thick leaves that grow on top of each other.

It does not need a lot of sun. If you have a windowsill that doesn’t receive a lot of direct sunlight, this plant would be great for such a location.

This plant tends to do well in dry conditions. But, make sure you water the plant regularly but do not allow the soil to become waterlogged. Ideally, the soil should be dry, before you water it.

9. Columnea ‘Firebird’

This vibrant plant comes from South America. The proportions of flowers to leaves is generally even, but things can quickly get out of hand and look messy if you do not keep it well pruned.

This plant will bloom a fair bit, even if it is in indirect light. If you have a hanging basket, this plant would be a good option for it.

10. Devil’s Backbone

Though this plant has a bit of an ominous name, it is lovely to look at. It comes from the West Indies and has leaves that vary a lot in shape. For the most part, you will find that they have a ‘Zig Zag’ shape.

This plant needs a lot of sun since it is from the West Indies. You also need to make sure you do not water this plant too much. Make sure it has periods when it experiences dry soil. This can help the plant thrive.
