7 Weird Travel Hacks to Make Your Next Trip Easier

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Travel – does that word give you anxiety? It shouldn’t because it should be fun.

The GO Group, LLC, published a survey that found more people plan to travel in 2018. 27 percent said they will travel more for business, and 33 percent said they plan to travel for leisure. So, travel must be exciting to some!

Don’t let the logistics get you down. With just a few weird tips, your trip can be a breeze. Check out the best travel hacks here.

1. Hide Money in Your Chapstick Tube

This is a great trick especially if you plan to go to a beach. Thieves don’t always look at Chapstick because they are busy looking for wallets, money clips, purses, and anything else that is more obvious.

Putting your money in the Chapstick tube is a tight squeeze, so you may want to put in larger bills.

You can leave your Chapstick tube out while you take a stroll or swim, and don’t have to worry about your valuables being snatched.

Of course, make sure the lid is on, so no one knows your little secret.

2. Pack an Empty Water Bottle

If you are flying, you can’t take water past security. However, you can take an empty water bottle.

After you get through security, fill it up at a drinking fountain! You won’t have to spend the $8 for a bottle of water.

Yeah, it’s not the fancy water. Wouldn’t you rather have that money to spend on your trip instead of water?!

3. Wear a Jacket to the Airport

We’ve all been behind the guy that takes 10 minutes to empty his the change in his pockets, take off his belt, fumbling for his keys, and so on. You don’t have to be that guy.

Store everything in your jacket. Then simply take off your coat and add it to the security bin.

Much easier than searching all your pockets, huh? Plus, it’s much easier to empty the security bin after you have stepped through.

Put your coat back on and watch everyone scramble to get put back together.

4. Roll Clothes

Folding clothes the old-fashioned way takes up space. When you want more room in your suitcase, try rolling your clothes.

Rolling your clothes will also help prevent wrinkles.

You can also keep your clothes smelling fresh by putting a dryer sheet in the bottom of your suitcase. This sheet will also help reduce static.

You will look sharp without the wrinkles, smell good, and have more room in your suitcase. Sounds like a win!

5. Avoid Traffic

When you are driving, do you ever see the High-Occupancy-Vehicle (HOV) lanes? Use them when you are on a road trip.

Most of these HOV lanes only require two or more passengers. You can take advantage of these lanes and beat some rush hour traffic.

Same is true with the airport – turn left at security. Everyone typically goes to the right.

6. Reuse Travel-Size Toiletries and Other Carry-On Tips

Worried about the right size toiletries? Easy search any site or store for travel size and you can go through the TSA checkpoint without any issues.

When you are done, don’t throw the containers away – reuse them! They are already the perfect size to stick in your carry-on. All liquids must be in a clear bag and must be in a 3.4-ounce bottle or smaller.

Remember that mascara, lip gloss, and other aerosol items are considered liquids and gels to TSA. You also have to be careful of certain food items like peanut butter, pudding, and icing which are also considered liquids.

Refill your travel-sized toothpaste with your normal toothpaste. You can still take your favorite toothpaste and not have to choose from the slim pickings in the travel toiletry section. You can also put toothpaste in an old eye dropper.

You can put those old prescription bottles to use to store items such as cotton swabs or hair ties.

Don’t let your necklaces tangle – thread them through a straw.

You can also keep everything together including dirty shoes and clean clothes. Just put your dirty shoes in a plastic shower cap.

7. How to Pack Light

This tip comes up over and over, and it is the ultimate goal. How can you do it?

Lay everything out on the bed to see what you have. Try packing things you can wear multiple times. For example, pack the basics like a pair of jeans, capris, solid color tops, and a jacket for the foundation of your outfits.

Pack lots of accessories to get change the look of an outfit like scarves, hats, and jewelry.

Shoes take up the most space, so stick to three pairs at most for a longer trip.

You can also double up in your carry-on. You can use a scarf or sarong as a blanket in your carry-on. You can then add them to an outfit during your trip.

There are a few necessary items you must pack including prescriptions, extra contacts, glasses, or anything else you can’t walk into a store and buy. Remember you can buy most other things at the store.

The Best Travel Hacks? Plan!

With the tips above, it’s still wise to plan ahead. Make sure you always give yourself enough time.

Maximize your packing space by getting expandable luggage for flying or consider a roof rack if driving such as one from 4WD Supacentre.

Do your research. There are so many apps available to help you organize and plan accordingly – use them! You can find apps to help you with translation, weather, transportation, locating Wi-Fi, and packing checklists.

Read reviews online. If you are going to Europe, look up articles on the nightlife. Sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor can give you some insider information. You may find something off the beaten path from these sites.

Most importantly, this should be fun. Don’t stress yourself out – plan, but don’t go overboard. Be flexible.
