There are a lot of ridiculously annoying things about school, but none of them are as bad as studying. You spend so much of your day learning, doing work, and listening to someone else talk. The last thing you want to do when you get home is homework. But you have to.

And after homework, you have to study even when all you want to do is binge Orange is the New Black on Netflix.

Unfortunately, studying is a necessary part of life.

Crank Up the Jams

Do you remember when your mom would tell you to turn off your TV or music to study? Well, turns out, she was only partially right.

While you should probably not turn on your favorite party anthem while you attempt to hit the books, there has been some proof that music does help you study.

A university in France found that students who listened to a one-hour lecture while classical music played in the background got significantly better scores in a quiz than those who heard the same lecture with no music.

They speculated that the music put students in a heightened emotional state, which made them more receptive to information.

So if you’re hoping to get into the National Honor Society with your grades, consider tuning into some classical station.

How on Earth does YouTube help you study? While it’s true that an average YouTube video will be a time-suck rather than a lifesaver, YouTube does have one very beneficial feature.

The odds are that, no matter what you’re looking to study, someone has made a video about it. Better yet, these videos are probably very entertaining.

Now, a YouTube video should never take the place of reviewing lecture notes or reading your textbook. But you can still find fun videos about the subject you’re learning that will drive home the important points in a way that will be both educational and entertaining.

Get Loud

If you’re studying in a library, you should probably skip this step. But if you’re cracking the books open in a secluded area, give it a shot.

Sit down with your notes and read them out loud. You might feel a little silly at first, but when you hear things spoken out loud, you can remember them easier.

Laugh

Humor activates our sense of wonder, which is where learning begins. There has been a lot of research done on why we remember the things that make us laugh.

There’s nothing funny about studying, but if you can find a way to tie the materials into something funny, you might be in luck. Laughter can boost retention.

This method helps you remember material better and you can improve your mood with a moment of comedic relief. This is especially nice during an exam.

Move Around

While you’re studying there is often nothing that sounds nicer than climbing into your favorite spot and getting comfortable. However, this could be a bad thing. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to fall asleep. And an after-school study session could quickly turn into a snooze-fest.

Instead, break up the monotony. Doing so can help you make new connections.

It’s also a good idea to get up and move during your studying. Exercise releases endorphins and those endorphins make you happy. They trigger your reward system while also telling your long-term memory to pay attention.

So if you can master reading and walking, get to stepping!

It might seem counterintuitive to step back from the books before the big test, but you should take some time to relax instead of continuing to cram. Taking a stroll does much more than simply calm your nerves.

A 20-minute walk, or another form of light exercise, before a test can actually boost your memory. This gives you the chance to recall all the stuff you tried so hard to study.

Snack Time

While you’re studying, it’s so easy to forget to feed yourself. But this can be detrimental to your health and to your studying. You need to make sure you’re eating the right foods to keep your thinking cap in tip-top shape.

Don’t eat junk foods that are high in sugar, because you’ll crash and won’t be able to focus after a while. Also, try to avoid empty calories.

So when you’re studying and snacking, stick to high protein foods that are going to keep you full. And give sushi a try! Fish has omega-3’s that can improve your mood and your study efforts.

Sleep Well

No matter how much you might try to convince yourself otherwise, you need to sleep. And there are so many advantages to sleep beside just being well rested.

When you sleep, your brain works hard at committing material to memory. If you don’t give your brain a chance to catch up and put away the information you’ve studied, you’re probably just going to lose it along with all of your other normal thoughts.
