The 10 Weirdest Places to Look for Lost Car Keys

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You’ve checked all of your normal places, but your lost car keys are nowhere to be found. Before the panic starts to set in and you call an Uber, there are a couple of new places you should check.

An average American spends 2.5 days a year looking for lost things, such as missing keys. So you’re not alone in this unfortunate phenomenon.

Save yourself some time by searching in these 10 places first. They’re not the most common places to look, but they’re often the right place to look.

1. In the Ignition or Doorknob

After a long drive home, the very first thing you can think about is getting inside and crashing on your couch.

Unfortunately, somewhere between parking your car and starting the next episode on Netflix, you’ve lost your keys. Because so many people like to focus on one thing at a time, it’s actually not uncommon to leave your keys in the doorknob or in the ignition.

It’s one of the more frequent ways to lose your car keys. Luckily, all it takes is a quick trip to the driveway or front door to recover them.

2. On Top of the Car

Another common spot for lost car keys in on top of the car. It’s happened to thousands of people, so you’re not alone.

We understand how it goes. You’re carrying dozens of boxes and loose items that you just can’t be bothered with the keys for the moment. On top of the car they go, only to be forgotten once all of the boxes are inside the house.

An easy solution for this is to get a lanyard. This tool will help you have your keys with you while at the same time freeing up your hands. View here for more options.

3. With your Pet’s Things

Pets are notorious for eating and grabbing things they shouldn’t. If your dog is like this be sure you know what foods dogs can and cannot have.

Even though many foods or objects can harm your pet that doesn’t mean they’re going to be any less tempted to steal it.

Suddenly missing your keys or other objects? Check the areas your pet likes to play in.

4. On the Bookshelf

Phones, keys, wallets all end up finding a place on the bookshelf at one time or another. It’s just natural! As you’re walking past, the shelves are at the perfect level to casually put your keys down and focus on some other activity.

However, before you know it, you’ve forgotten where your keys are and panic is setting in. Go around and retrace your steps. Chances are you’ll find your keys sitting on a bookshelf somewhere.

5. In Your Pockets

People don’t tend to lose their keys in their jean pockets. Mostly because those pockets are too tight to fit keys comfortable and they’re easy to find. However, if you’ve worn a jacket recently, checking the pockets is the first place you should go.

Rain jackets and other heavy coats have longer and bigger pockets that make the perfect hiding spot for your lost keys.

6. Inside the Refrigerator

Before you laugh at this one, you should know that it’s not uncommon to leave your keys in the refrigerator or the pantry.

When you get home one of the first things people like to do is head to the kitchen to grab a snack. With the keys in one hand and the cereal in the other, it’s only natural to put your keys down in the refrigerator to free up your hand for milk.

7. In the Trash

We’ve all done it-thrown away some object in the trashcan because we were distracted. Keys, retainers, and phones have all ended up in dumpsters simply because their owners had their mind on something else when they were throwing something away.

Before you toss your garbage back into the dumpster, make sure that your keys are lying somewhere in the bag.

8. Inside the Washer or Dryer

This place usually ends up as a continuation of number 5. When you don’t find your keys in your pockets, they usually end up in the washer or dryer.

This can mean an expensive replacement if you have a key that unlocks your car automatically. Before you start the rinse cycle, be sure to check all the pockets of your clothes to make sure your keys are slipping past undetected.

9. Inbetween the Wall and Your Furniture

“How did my keys end up here?” We’ve all asked this a time or two. Sometimes keys end up in the most random places like in between the wall and your furniture.

Maybe your furry friend knocked them there, maybe you subconsciously dropped them there. Regardless, it’s a great place to check if you’re missing your keys. If you’re constantly losing your keys in your home it might be time to think about some home improvement projects.

Adding a specific place for the keys will help you to avoid losing them as often. Key rings, shelves, and bowls are all attractive and effective options.

10. On the Countertop

The last place that your keys might be hiding is on the countertop. Hiding in plain sight. It’s the last place you’ll probably look, simply because it’s the most obvious.

Before you ravage your house, turning over chairs and furniture, take five minutes to check your counter tips. It’s not uncommon for keys to get thrown behind blenders or toasters in the middle of a busy day.

Plus it’s a lot easier to conduct this search as well.

Recover Your Lost Car Keys

Missing keys are a normal part of life. At some time or another, you’ll be in hurry and your keys will seem to have disappeared before your eyes. There are two solutions to lost car keys. First, check these 10 weird places we’ve mentioned.

Second, get a spare key. This will help you get where you need to go without missing important appointments. Then when the work is done, you can search for your car keys in peace.
