10 Weird and Wonderful Homes You’ll Want to Move Into

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It’s no secret that everyone has their own taste in home style. A quick scroll through the home decor section of Pinterest is enough to prove that. Our home is our castle, and we want it to be uniquely ours. But what happens when that tendency towards the individual goes just a little bit overboard?

There are some people who have done bizarre things with their houses all over the world. From Japan’s transparent houses and toilet seat houses to a whole series of upside down houses, the home design world can get strange.

Read on to discover ten strange houses that, in spite of it all, you’ll want to move into.

The Hobbit House, Wales

In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit…” and also the residents of this unique house in Wales. Simon Dale, a photographer who also happens to be a huge fan of JRR Tolkien’s masterwork, The Lord of the Rings, built a replica of Bag End. But while you may think building such a custom house would be an expensive endeavor, the cost of the house came in at $5,200.

Dale, his father in law, and a few friends built the house start to finish in four months. The cozy little home features a sod roof, logs to form the frame of the house, rounded windows, and even a small loft. Dale says on his site that he had little experience in carpentry before starting the project, and that he only used a few tools.

Giant Seashell House, Mexico

Although we haven’t quite perfected underwater dwellings yet, many of us who grew up watching The Little Mermaid have daydreamed about going to live under da sea. And while this house in Mexico City isn’t quite the same as living in King Triton’s palace, it will make you feel like you’re swimming with the fishes. The Giant Seashell House, as its name might suggest, is shaped like a giant seashell inside and out.

The “opening” of the shell features a stunning stained glass wall that makes for a colorful entrance to the house. The architects who designed this home created it for a family of four with the works of Antoni Gaudi and Frank Lloyd Wright in mind. In the center of the shell, there’s an entertainment room with circular bench seating and a television mounted on the central pillar.

Croft House, Australia

When a family bought a piece of land with spectacular views in Australia, they decided they didn’t want to build just any home on their new property. Instead, they commissioned architect James Stockwell to design a home for them that would suit the landscape. They wanted coastal views in every direction from the house, and they didn’t want the house to interfere with the look of the landscape.

What Stockwell came up with looks positively alien, though in the most beautiful way.

The house has a low, sloping profile that mimics some of the surrounding hills in the area. He made sure to use only locally- and sustainably-sourced materials, and the house’s solar power system ensures that the home is eco-friendly from every angle.

Old Water Tower, Belgium

When most of us look at a water tower, we don’t think, “Gee, that would be a great place to live.”

Luckily, however, a Belgian design firm decided to think outside the cookie cutter house box, and turned an old brick water tower into a gorgeous home. They were not the first to take up residence there, though; the abandoned water tower was used as a Nazi hideout during World War II.

The water tower home features a stunning spiral staircase made of wrought iron and a surprising amount of light for its structure. The floor plan is open and includes a modern kitchen and a spacious lounge area. But before you start checking the Zillow prices on this house, you might want to think about climbing 100 feet of stairs every day when you get home from work.

Brooklyn Clock Tower Home, New York

There is something irresistibly romantic about living inside a clock tower. The majesty of the chiming bells, the visual grandeur of the gears and hands, and the hidden nature of the space appeals to our poetic side in a way even abandoned water towers don’t. And that’s just what an architect in Brooklyn thought when he designed a home inside a clock tower in New York City.

If you’re looking for the best views in New York City, you will not beat the ones in this 7,000-square-foot loft. There are large circular windows with the clock faces still intact that look out over the city from the penthouse of a skyscraper.

But with a price tag of $18 million, you had better hope you can work out a rent to own agreement. Be sure to read more about that.

Star Trek: Voyager House, Leicestershire

Okay, Trekkies, we know you’re out there; raise your hands if you’d like a chance to live on a starship.

The Enterprise might be a little hard to swing, but you just might be able to land a spot on the Voyager. This house in Leicestershire is meant to replicate the look of the iconic Star Trek vessel helmed by Captain Janeway.

Tony Alleyne designed this house to feel like the inside of a Star Fleet vessel, right down to the bluish lighting and the various display screens. The house comes complete with intergalactic sound effects, and if you resist the urge to put the house on red alert at least once, you are stronger than we. Unfortunately, Alleyne lost the house to his ex-wife in court proceedings after their divorce.

Cohetillos, Bolivia

Once upon a time, the city of El Alto, Bolivia, was known for its monochromatic, drab architecture. But Freddy Mamani was having none of that, and he set out to change the face of his city. The result was the Cohetillos, which are so colorful, they border on psychedelic.

Mamani did his job well, however, and while his houses do feature vibrant colors, their clean lines and large windows give them a sense of elegant exuberance. The colors and designs are meant to mimic some of the designs of pre-Inca and traditional Andean cultures. Mamani has built more than sixty of the buildings around El Alto, and he has plans for more.

Skateboard House, California

When you were a kid, did you ever daydream about skateboarding across your kitchen or down the hall? If you did, we have the perfect house for you. Some architects in California built a house that is one big enclosed skate ramp waiting for some awesome stunts.

All of the walls in this house curve up into half-pipes at the edges, and built-in benches have rails on their edges made for grinding. Pierre Andre Senizergues, a former pro-skating world champion designed the house, so you know it’s legit.

Slide House, Japan

Even if skateboarding wasn’t your speed growing up, it’s safe to say that most of us dreamed about having a giant slide in our houses. It would be the ultimate upgrade from sliding down stair banisters, and something about a slide makes getting from Point A to Point B so much better. Well, a designer in Japan took that dream and made it a reality with their slide house.

The slide house is three stories tall, and it has a slide connecting all three floors. You do have to take the stairs that run up one side of the house, but the slide runs around the outside border of the other half of the house, with stops at each floor. The central part of the house is as airy and beautiful as we would all hope a home equipped with a three-story slide would be.

Church Home, Holland

Regardless of whether you are a religious person or not, there’s no arguing that churches provide some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. Soaring ceilings, stained glass, and open spaces make for areas designed to create a sense of awe and reverence. So what if you could take a space with so much inherent beauty and turn it into your home?

In Holland, one design firm decided to do just that; they took two abandoned churches in the Netherlands and converted them into family homes. Chancel areas became dining rooms, congregation areas became living space, and choir lofts became modern sleeping areas. The spaces are airy and beautiful in the way only a house of worship can be.

Discover More Strange Houses

Human creativity is boundless, and some of our best ideas come when we’re designing our living spaces. These ten houses are bizarre, no doubt, but they are also beautiful in their own strange way. Which house would you choose, or what unusual design would you like to live in?
