Here are 5 of the Weirdest Movies Ever Created
When discussing his philosophy on terrifying audiences, Alfred Hitchcock once said that his goal was to, “Give them pleasure. The same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.”
It’s a stark contrast to how most movies get made. Most films are content to provide a welcomed distraction to our real-world troubles.
Then there are films that want to challenge their audience. To make them experience unease or discomfort that moviegoers often avoid.
If you’re interested in the morbid, macabre, and just plain weird, read on. We’re detailing for of the weirdest movies ever.
1. Hausu (House)
A group of Japanese schoolgirls getaway for the weekend at the home of their friend’s aunt. Once they get there, they discover bleeding walls, dancing severed heads, a demonic cat, and engage in several dance numbers while running from ghosts.
Talk about formulaic.
But on a serious note, Hausu is a film that everyone should experience at least once. To say it’s bizarre is majorly underselling the film, and it’s just wacky enough that even non-horror fans can find something to love.
2. Rubber
Rubber is a fantastic exercise in meta-film, and takes its through line, “No reason,” to its limits.
The film centers around a group of people who gather in the desert to watch a sentient, murderous tire roll by.
Yes, really. That’s the actual plot of the movie, we promise. Over the next 80 minutes, director Quintin Dupieux treats viewers to one of the strangest movies ever made.
If you’ve ever wanted to see a tire bounce on someone until they die, Rubber may be the film for you.
3. Eraserhead
In all honesty, David Lynch deserves a list of strange movies unto himself. The man is a master at making audiences uncomfortable.
But out of his entire body of work, Eraserhead may be his magnum opus.
Centering on Henry (played by Jack Nance who would later go on to work with Lynch on Twin Peaks), a young factory worker as he struggles to adapt to fatherhood after his significant other leaves him.
Oh, and the baby is some sort of worm. And there’s also a lady in Henry’s radiator who sings to him from time to time. Also, his town seems to be some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland.
We weren’t kidding when we said this is one of the weirdest movies of all time.
But for those willing to dig a little deeper, you’ll find a powerful piece of the very real fears of parenthood.
4. Un Chien Andalou
A surprising number of people don’t know that Salvador Dali made films in addition to paintings. While most remain obscured or destroyed, one, Un Chien Andalou, managed to get released.
Though it’s only 21 minutes long, the film features no coherent narrative, instead substituting plot for symbolism.
Expect to see eyeballs sliced open, dead animals, and general unpleasantness. Suffice to say this isn’t a film you’ll want to watch if you’re squeamish.
Which makes it all the more surprising that the film garnered a ton of praise. It currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and even inspired a song by rock band Pixies.
5. Escape From Tomorrow
Escape From Tomorrow isn’t a “good” film in a traditional sense. It isn’t even something we’d recommend watching.
But boy is it uncomfortable and weird.
The plot revolves around a father taking his family to Disney World for the weekend to distract them from the fact that he recently lost his job. His wife seems disinterested, his kids demand more, and Jim White seems at wits’ end.
Slowly but surely, White begins to break down over the course of the weekend. He fantasizes (or does he?) about a cat flu killing park patrons, has an affair with a demonic Disney princess, envisions the end of the world and hallucinates on all of your favorite Disney World rides.
What we’ve yet to mention is that filmmaker Randy Moore filmed the movie at the actual Disney World park.
The very fact that someone managed to sneak a camera into Disney World multiple times, get enough footage for a 90+ minute film, and release it at Sundance without Disney suing is astounding.
Due to the legal ramifications, it’s hard to find a legit copy of the film on store shelves. Still, those dedicated to finding it should be able to do so on a site like bolly4u or Amazon Prime.
