Weird Custom License Plates You’ll Wish You Thought of First

Did you know that the state of Illinois alone has issued almost 640,000 vanity plates?

That accounts for a little over 6% of all registered vehicles in the state. These funny license plates graze the likes of cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more.

You don’t have to have a weird car to get one of these weird plates—you just have to have a car! Everyone from your mom and grandma to your best friends can enjoy the humor behind these plates. Whether they’re dirty, political, or merely silly, there’s something to be said about their uniqueness.

So buckle in, friends, and get prepared to laugh or gasp in shock. We’re introducing you to some custom plate ideas that you’ll wish you’d thought of first (but you can borrow their genius!).

Funny License Plates: Not for the Serious Sallies and Steves

A vanity plate can be anything you want it to be.

It can describe your driving style, your lifestyle, your political views. As long as it follows these rules about font, you’ve pretty much got free reign! (We’ll look into more rules later because rules are boring.)

We’ve broken down our favorites into categories. Feel free to take inspiration from these and consider your own personalization. The road could use a little less rage, a little more hilarity!

These’ll Make You Laugh

1. 0TURDS tops our list of funny names. Why, you ask? Because it’s on the back of a plumber’s vehicle, no less!

2. You know how some states have themed license plates? They’re grouped into categories, such as Environmental, Sports, Universities, etc.

Well, one of them in Virginia made for a funny plate. At the bottom, it says “Kids First,” which is awesome…Unless, of course, the driver gets a license plate that says EATTHE, making the sentence, “Eat the kids first.” Probably not what they had in mind!

3. IFARTED or UFARTED. Who was it? You’ll never know. . .

These Might Make the Cops Hate You

4. NOFKSGVN: This car is just asking to get pulled over or get in a little road rage action. It’s one thing to feel like you don’t give a *you-know-what* but it’s a whole other thing to buy a vanity plate with this message on it.

5. 370H55V seems like an innocent-enough plate, right? Wrong…When this plate is read upside-down, it reads A**HOLE. Don’t believe us? Turn your computer screen upside-down!

6. We found one woman out there in the world sporting her ride as a GIFT4BJ. Now, usually, people don’t like to brag about that kind of stuff—but she thought a blue Mustang deserved some flaunting. (Still trying to decide if we agree…)

7. RU18YET: This guy either checks IDs at the bar or he’s got an affinity for younger women. Kinda creepy…but at least he’s staying within his boundaries.

8. II1I11I: You know how cops always spell out your plate when in pursuit, doing word associations for the letters and numbers on it?

Well, this BMW is sure to make the cops mad when they’re trying to catch him for speeding. There’s no telling which one’s an “I” and which is a “1” unless you’ve got great vision and a lot of time.

9. N BYOND: This plate is probably an awesome sight to see when it’s passing you at light-speed!

10. EWW POOP: This person dislikes poop so much that they, well, got in on their license plate. Kind of a funny way to express your dislike for something! In our eyes, they gave poop a platform!

11. HOR5 SH1T: This one works well on the back of any vehicle with some horsepower. Because that’s just hor5 sh1t!

12. The conversation every mother has with their child before leaving the house—can you think of it? This mom (or dad) put it right on their plate so they’ll never forget: PB4UGO. Sound advice, especially for a long road trip!

Them’s the Rules

All right, all right—time for the boring stuff: rules. We mentioned that you’ve got free reign with your vanity plate, and that’s mostly true. However, you’ve got to abide by a few guidelines:

• Can be a combination of letters, numbers, hyphens, and spaces, adding up to 7 characters for vehicle plates and 6 characters for trailers or motorcycles
• Must not be vulgar (hmmm, you sure?), racist, ethnic, or indecent
• Musn’t refer to sex, drugs, or include profanity (another hmmm from us here)
• Must not receive more than (2) complaints

It’s fairly painless to get your vanity plate to say whatever you want it to, within reason. If your request for a custom plate gets denied, there are even opportunities to repeal them. This works sometimes, like with the license plate FARTS. 

In other cases, it may only get denied because it’s already in use. 

As long as you pay the costs, and your idea is unique to your state, you should be good to go. Custom plates do cost, though—an upfront fee of $84.75 with an annual renewal fee of $42.00.
