Weird Psychological Effects of Music on the Brain

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Whether you’re a fan of jazz, classic rock, R’n’B, or EDM, most of us will say that we enjoy music in one form or another.

Music has a profound effect on all of us. It can make us feel a wide range of emotions and it can alter the way that our brain behaves.

But exactly what is music’s effect on the brain? And, why does music make is feel good?

In this article, we’ll delve into the weird psychological effects of music on the brain.

Music Can Improve Your Memory

Have you ever noticed that when you listen to music, you start to remember things? Music can bring all kinds of memories flooding back. Even as far back as childhood.

Believe it or not, listening to music can help you to remember things. This is because music has an amazing and unique ability to improve the functions of your brain that deal with memory.

When you hear a certain piece of music that is linked to a specific memory, you’ll recall it. But the connection could be small. It might have been something on the TV or the radio at the time.

When you hear that song, everything will come flooding back and you’ll have the most vivid memories of something you’d not thought about for years.

Music is strong enough that even when someone has Alzheimer’s disease, it can spark memories.

Ambient Music Is Great For Creativity

When you’re working, you may like to turn up your favorite tunes loud and power through your workload. However, if you want to get creative work done, ambient music is the way to go.

It’s important to find the right level to spark creativity. Too loud and it might distract you from your train of thought, too quiet and you’ll spend more time straining to listen than you will think about the creative task at hand.

This is similar to the way that lighting and temperature can help or hinder our productivity.

Why not look for some royalty free music to help you work through your next creative project?

Happy and Sad Music Affects How We Read People’s Faces

It can be easy to spot whether a piece of music is either happy or sad. This is because our brain will respond in a different way to happy and sad music.

Did you know that you’re more likely to interpret a neutral expression on a person as either happy or sad based on the music that you’re listening to? If you hear happy music, you’ll see a happy face. If you hear sad music, then the neutral face will become sad.

There are two kinds of emotions that are related to music; felt emotions and perceived emotions.

This means that we can perceive the emotion of a piece of music and we don’t necessarily have to feel the emotion ourselves. This is why some people can take enjoyment from listening to sad songs, because, while the music is sad, it is not making us sad.

Music Can Help You Learn a New Language

When learning a new language, it may help if you try and sing the words.

A 2013 study asked 60 participants to listen to and repeat phrases in Hungarian. This language was chosen as it was completely foreign to all of the participants. Some were told to say the words back, while others were told to repeat them back rhythmically or to sing them back.

The study found that those that sang the music back, retained the words better than the other participants in the study.

So, next time you’re in the shower, belt out a few bars of German or French and you’ll be speaking the languages in no time.

Mixtapes Could Help Us Figure Out Personality Traits

Did you ever make a playlist or a mixtape for a new partner? When you examine the musical tastes of a new partner, you’re probably sizing them up to find out what type of personality they have.

In a study of young couples getting to know each other, 58% turned to music as a topic of conversation, compared with 37% for the next topic of discussion.

It also turned out that people’s top ten songs give some reliable insights into the personality of the listener.

The new couples were asked to describe the personality of their new partner based on their top ten songs. The five personalities included extraversion, openness to experiences, agreeableness, emotional stability, and conscientiousness.

For the most part, the results were accurate. Although conscientiousness is hard to spot through musical taste, apparently.

Music Can Improve Your IQ

Did you know that when children listen to music regularly or play musical instruments from a young age, it will make them smarter?

In one of several studies on this subject, after just 20 days of exposure to music, 90% of the children participating experienced physical changes to their brain. These changes allowed for a rapid transfer of cognitive information.
