"Flash Mob of Protests": "No War With Syria" Rallies Planned in Over 70 Cities for Saturday, 8/31

A new campaign has been started to help coordinate worldwide protests against the acceleration of the war in Syria by the corporate military-industrial complex. Protests are already planned in over 70 cities worldwide for Saturday, August 31. It’s almost like the flash mob version of a global anti-war protest.
One of the co-founders of the March Against Monsanto, Nick Bernabe, is a leading organizer of the rallies and his experience may be just what is needed to help mobilize people quickly. Wednesday, Bernabe discussed the viral reach of the campaign to date on the Adam vs. the Man show. He described the open source nature of the protests by saying “we’re just trying to help get this thing viral”, noting that they were leaving the structure of the protests up to the local leaders.
One advantage the alternative media can wield is the timely use of social media to counter false media narratives, and the March Against Monsanto co-founder has already done that once. The March Against Monsanto brought over 2 million people to the streets in 52 countries. That organic movement broke through many mainstream media barriers, including forcing CNN to at least acknowledge that the protests happened and there is some controversy over GMO food.
The idea is the same this time around, except the goal is to stop the acceleration of World War 3 by using a show of visible opposition to force the mainstream debate to focus on not just whether western powers should “intervene” but why the conflict is even at this point. Once the debate is started about the merits of the conflict itself, it will become apparent that the series of events as portrayed by the US, UK and others is not only misleading, but false.
Evidence has recently emerged that the “rebels” or other unaccountable actors were responsible for last week’s deadly gas attacks that have held the international spotlight.
The cycle of information has sped up with each crisis, from created problem to initial lies to the mainstream media’s forced acknowledgement of the dubious nature of the problem’s origin. The “No War With Syria” campaign will provide further evidence that alternative media can quickly influence international headlines from a grassroots level, given the right stimulus.
In a world of loud distractions, to break through the mainstream disinformation cycle, a cause needs to have a common benefit for enough people and must also be self-evident. If the benefit does not have to be explained, then the information will spread quicker through word of mouth.
The concept sounds simple but that is not easy to put into practice in the crowded internet environment where all kinds of websites compete for a short blocks of the average person’s shrinking free time. To master this, is not a small feat, and to replicate it is exponentially harder. In less than a week, the campaign has reached almost 2,000 likes and is represented in over 70 cities worldwide. With time left before Saturday’s march, there is a chance for it to reach into the tens of thousands of Facebook likes. The March Against Monsanto gained over 100,000 Facebook likes during the final weeks leading up to the worldwide march, beginning a sharp climb from about 15,000 to around 125,000 on the May 25th march. A similar reaction can also be achieved because the Syria situation is one that does not have to be explained to most people for them to err on the side of preventing war.

-Simply click on your event tab from your FB homepage
-Click create an event
-Name the event ‘No War With Syria Rally (your city)’ example: No War With Syria Rally San Diego
-make sure you set the privacy to public so other people can find it when they search for it
-Pick a central and relevant location and start time for your area (please make it on Saturday August 31st)
-Invite ALL of your friends and encourage everyone else to invite their friends as well and do whatever else you can to let people know about the rally
-Try to get some volunteers together to make banners to do some canvassing on Friday the night before your rally. Contact the local overpass light brigade or set one up yourself. Make signs.
-Pass out flyers in the days leading up to your rally, if you can’t afford them, ask for some donations. Some local businesses may also be willing to help you out with printing
-Contact other activist groups in your area for help(occupy groups, anti-war groups, veterans for peace groups, code pink, civil liberty groups etc)
-contact local media and let them know about your rally. Focus on independent journalists in your area.
-Set up a hashtag for your march and use it on FB, Twitter, and Instagram
