America Is On Borrowed Time

Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective

Yep, not a drop of alcohol to be found after the 18th Amendment went into effect, creating Prohibition. Right…

I hate being an individual who speaks about gloom and doom. I’d prefer to believe that great things are in store for America and that if we’ll only work more diligently and pray harder as Christians, things will get done and God will grant this nation a final and permanent reprieve from judgment. I really wish I could believe that so that I could say it with meaning. Unfortunately, I can’t and guess what? I don’t need a blood moon or any other “harbinger” to tell me what is clearly obvious either.

Judgment is coming. I guess that is hitting me rather hard for its obviousness lately.

Like all nations, America is going to be the recipient of that judgment and it’s way overdo. Right now, Christians who are caught up in the prevailing nonsense that tries to make us believe that if only we would work and pray harder to turn America around (which usually means, politically), then more people will become open to the gospel message, invite Jesus into their hearts, and this in turn, will affect the overall morality of America making things better.

In the meantime, abortion and other evils rage on. Since the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that essentially made abortion legal in every part of the United States, the slaughter of unborn babies has risen to a breathtaking near 60 million! That’s just in America! It does not include worldwide abortions and it only goes back to 1973. That’s 60,000,000 unborn children who were ripped from what should have been the most protected place on earth, their mother’s womb.

Even with all of the videos coming out about Planned Parenthood, we have not been able to force the federal government to defund Planned Parenthood. There is even now, with the most recent undercover video related to Planned Parenthood, allegedly a video showing an entire abortion of an unborn, yet alive baby. This is not only tragic in every sense of the word, but highlights the level of evil in American society. The idea that Planned Parenthood not only profits from the murder of innocent, unborn children, but again profits from selling murdered children to institutions for “study” is beyond the pale and fully unconscionable.

Yet, it persists unabated. I believe it will continue in spite of the protests from those who believe abortion is simply another word and practice for murder.

Consider that overall, Christians have been able to accomplish little to nothing in getting abortion laws reversed. But what would happen even if we could? Would abortions stop? Nope. They would become an underground, black market “necessity” where doctors would make tons more money than they do now and where we would likely see more women dying along with their murdered children.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that if laws were changed to make abortions illegal again, Christians would honestly start to believe that they made a difference; that things in America were starting to change. Why? Well, it’s because outwardly, they would be changing, but the heart of the people in the abortion industry will not have changed. The mom who still believes the “best” thing to do is end her pregnancy by having her child murdered and torn from her body would still believe that to be the best thing to do even if the laws reverted back to making abortion illegal. Isn’t this what the scenario was before abortion became legal?

By the way, I want to be very clear here that I am NOT saying that because of that, abortion should be kept legal. I am saying that Christians need to stop looking at outward appearances and focus on the heart of the problem, something only God can fix. Abortions are symptomatic of the problems with the heart of the individual.

Consider prohibition in the early 1900s. The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution became the law of the land in 1920, due in large part to one woman named Carry Nation. Nation did whatever she could to convince leaders that alcohol was the problem in the land and if it was outlawed, the problem would go away. Nation’s problem was that she was seeking outward change that she incorrectly believed would solve a heart problem.

Once alcohol became illegal (Nation did not live long enough to see it happen, having died in 1911), a number of things happened almost immediately. First, people continued to drink. Nothing changed. What did change was the way they were able to obtain liquor from that point forward (until the 18th Amendment was appealed). Second, Prohibition truly gave rise to organized crime in a big way. It made men like Al Capone very wealthy because they simply did not care about obeying the laws. They knew that people would still drink and those guys decided that they would be the supply. It was basic economics, supply and demand.

A law was created that addressed an issue (alcohol consumption), but no law has the ability to change a person’s heart or true outlook. People can be forced to obey laws outwardly, but if they desire something strong enough in their heart, they will find a way to go around that law. In the case of Prohibition, speakeasies, stills, and bootlegging became the norm. People who really wanted alcohol did not go without. They simply had to pay more for it and because of all the homemade brews, more people got sick and/or died because of alcohol poisoning since there were no legitimate industry standards.

But because of the 18th Amendment, there was a group of people celebrating. They were those who believed in abstinence, church goers, and others who firmly believed this new law against alcohol would change the fabric of the family and ultimately America. Fathers and husbands would no longer have a reason to drink (because they ostensibly couldn’t get any liquor) so they would spend more time at home with the wife and children. They wouldn’t get drunk so they would stop beating the wife and children.

Unfortunately, that’s not what happened. Crime skyrocketed, deaths climbed. Alcohol use increased, it didn’t decrease. Finally, in 1933, the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th and Prohibition was officially a thing of the past. It had been a train wreck. People who wanted to continue drinking during Prohibition found a way because though the law had gone into effect, the law had no ability to change a person’s heart. The apostle Paul says this repeatedly in his epistles, especially Romans.

This is what frustrates me today. People accuse me of saying that I think Christians should do nothing politically to change America. That they shouldn’t vote because it’s all going down the toilet anyway. That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’ve voted in every presidential election since I became old enough to vote. I’ve seen this country go from relatively good to terribly bad and it has one thing in common: the heart of men and women.

I can see that because of the terrible changes that have come to be part of America’s fabric, God has every right to judge this nation and all living in it who reject Him and His ways.

Is abortion murder? Yes, it is because it is the willful end to an innocent’s beating heart. America has its share of murdered, unborn children since 1973 totaling nearly 60 million, yet God continues to extend His grace allowing America to continue to exist.

We have seen same-sex unions become the law of the Land, yet Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of that lifestyle. Yet, God seems to look the other way where America is concerned.

Our government – at seemingly all levels – has become corrupted, filled with people who are bought off. We see cronyism at work at almost every level of government. Yet God appears not to notice.

America has gone beyond the point of return. Even if we could change laws to make abortions illegal, it would have no effect on a woman’s heart regarding her unborn child. If she wanted an abortion, she would find a way.

If laws could be changed so that America once again, appeared to be more conservative and “god-fearing,” then many would believe they have done “God’s will.” In reality, they will have done nothing because people’s hearts would not have been changed.

I do not need a blood moon to tell me what is painfully clear. This country is headed for judgment. I have absolutely no idea why God has chosen to wait, but my sneaking suspicion is that He would like Christians to stop mucking around in politics and start preaching the gospel of grace (in word and deed) so that people might actually see the difference between their heart and the heart that God gives us through our new birth in Him.

I hear people crying about how they “fear” for their country. WAKE UP and fear for the people in this country who do not yet know the LIVING GOD!!!! Changing laws, even making America more “conservative” would still likely have no impact on people’s lives where their need for God is concerned.

America is on borrowed time. We are well past the point of no return. There is no going back. If you want to work to change America politically, I won’t stand in your way. For me? While this country races toward judgment (and it is coming!), my preference is to be involved in pulling people from the fire by introducing them to the only One who can save them from their sin. Which one has eternal value?

People’s hearts need to change. Laws cannot do that. Even where Israel is concerned, God complained about the fact that outwardly, they did what they were supposed to do but their hearts were still far away from God.

“Then the Lord said, ‘Because this people draw near with their words And honor Me with their lip service, But they remove their hearts far from Me, And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote’,” (Isaiah 29:13).

Ezekiel also refers to this same problem.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh,” (Ezekiel 36:26).

America has a heart problem. No amount of laws are going to change that condition. Like every other nation, America will one day come to an end, most likely being swallowed up in what will become the final “Roman” revised empire led by Antichrist. Nothing will keep that from happening.

However, God will continue to save people out of the Babylon that has become America. But feel free to continue to work to change America so that it appears more conservative. You will then come to believe that you have changed people’s hearts. It is a deception crafted by Satan himself to keep Christians from their true calling, the Great Commission.

I cannot believe that there are people who actually believe that they will have a leg to stand on when they tell God to His face that they worked diligently to change America because they thought that’s what He meant by the Great Commission. Something is wrong with that picture.

A missionary friend of ours (and his family) have just recently relocated to Nicaragua. They believe God has called them to help get women out of the sex trafficking industry. They are not trying to change that industry! They are working to get victims out of it. They have only been there for a few weeks and may have one of their first leads today on getting someone out. Once they get the woman out, she will stay with them, where she will be presented with the gospel and surrounded by God’s love. Hopefully, she will give her life to Christ and this same missionary family will be there to help her through the transition and support her while she heals emotionally and becomes a Christian with a message for others.

Why do I think there are people who call themselves Christians who would rather be involved in changing the laws to make it more difficult for sex traffickers to work, as opposed to simply going to the front lines and helping victims get out?

America is burning and instead of trying to help individuals, Christians and conservatives are trying to put larger hoses that carry more water in place. Our mission field is wherever you are now. Do not forget that every person you pass each day may be in need of a Savior.

Their politics do not matter when it comes to their need for a Savior.
