Walid Shoebat Espouses Some Powerful Callousness

Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective

He should be repudiated because what he says is unconscionable. The message he is sending to the world is not one that is born of Christian love for all people. I stopped reading Walid Shoebat’s editorials and blog some time ago because it seemed to me that he had moved into the area of Dominionism or Christian Reconstructionism. This belief often engenders a view that sees people as personal enemies, rather than lost people who need Jesus. I happened to notice this particular article because it was in the TRENDING section of Facebook. I was curious, so I read it. I wished I hadn’t, but at the same time, it is important for Christians to step up and express their disdain for the type of message that Shoebat espouses. He is sending the wrong message to the world and he needs to be called out for it and Christians need to actively disassociate themselves with his message.

As a Christian, I would like to state loudly and clearly that I stand 100% opposed to the comments made by Mr. Walid Shoebat in an editorial he personally wrote on June 12th shortly after the gun-related massacre of people at a gay nightclub called The Pulse, in Orlando. I do not understand how anyone who calls him/herself a Christian can write the words he has written, while calling himself a Christian the way he has done. He has stated in part:

I don’t care about gays who are Muslim loving anti-gun liberals. Stupid people who hate life die. Stupid people who hate life always die.

Uh…God cares and He does not want one person to perish without gaining salvation (2 Peter 3:9). Shoebat should most certainly know this. Statements like the one above which appear throughout his diatribe do not come from a Christian heart. Please understand that I am not saying Mr. Shoebat is not a Christian. I’m not making that judgment because only God knows his heart. What I am judging is what the man has stated and from all appearances, I find it impossible to believe that Jesus would make the kind of statements that Mr. Shoebat has made.

In essence, Walid Shoebat there is a severe sense of callousness that emanates from his article and verbiage. Even Lot did not make such offhand and callous remarks in the situation he found himself in, but actually called the men of Sodom “brothers” or “friends” depending upon the translation (Genesis 19:6).

I want to state that I fully reject and condemn Shoebat’s words, the callousness of his attitude, and his seeming absolute lack of Christlike love toward all people. But again, this is often where Dominionism leads, in my opinion. It breeds contempt for others. It sees people who oppose Christianity as the enemy. In one sense, those who remain lost are enemies of God, just as those of us who are now Christians were all enemies of God prior to embracing salvation (Colossians 1:21), but these people are not our enemies and there is a huge difference. Paul speaks clearly about this when he tells us quite plainly that our battle is not against flesh and blood (human beings), but against those in the spiritual realm (Ephesians 6:12).

All have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). The only thing that differentiates me from a lost person is that now, I have salvation that is only available through Jesus. The lost person does not.

A few days ago, 50 people were killed by a madman jihadist, who thought he was doing Allah a favor. This same mentality unfortunately seems to exist within the words of Walid Shoebat as well. In this entire article, I sense no compassion, no plea for the lost who do not know Jesus, and no heart that seeks the lost. Instead, we are met with anti-Semitic remarks about specific Jewish persons. We see the word “stupid” used where gays and Muslims are concerned. Shoebat’s callousness is obvious. How is that part of the biblical definition of love?

Dominionists fail to understand that we are here for one purpose – it is to bring glory to God and we do so by winning lost souls to Jesus for salvation and by living a life that allows the lost to see the “light” shining from within us. How can we win them if we heap contempt on them? That is not our job! God will judge and yes, only those who have been “sprinkled” with the blood of Christ (Hebrews 9:21; 1 Peter 1:2), come out from under His wrath and judgment.

While I do agree with Shoebat when he states that we will see more of these attacks on American soil and it is likely that bombs, not guns will be used, I completely reject the way he so viciously treats the lost (whether they are gay, Muslim, or something else), as if God cannot possibly love them. This is the height of hubris on Shoebat’s part. He seemingly has aligned himself with the false teachings of not only Dominionism, but quite possibly the Westboro Baptist Church!

Yes, things are just starting to ramp up apparently and we will likely see more shootings and bombings. We need to remember that God is the One who allows these things because of His ultimate purposes. In the meantime, whether things become better or worse in society, our job remains the same. It is to compassionately reach out to those who are lost, who are dying, and who will spend an eternity apart from God if they do not change the direction of their lives.

In Exodus 32:32, Moses pleads that God will not punish Israel for their sin. Instead, Moses actually pleads with God to blot his (Moses’) name out of the book of life! Who does this? Who loves so much that they are willing to exchange their life for someone else’s? Moses certainly did and God said “no.” Jesus did and God said “yes,” and His sacrifice for the world was fully accepted by God the Father.

Not only has Walid Shoebat shown how little he loves, but has not even come close to asking God to blot out his name from the book of Life in exchange for another’s. Folks, I just wrote an article yesterday asking if it is possible for Christians to biblically love too much? I don’t think we can. I think it is very difficult, which is certainly one of the things that makes being a Christian so difficult.

Clearly, Walid Shoebat needs to humble himself or God will do it. Martin Luther (the Reformer) seemed to have the same problem later in life. He began focusing on people and their propensity toward sin and selfishness. He took his eyes off God and the seed of anti-Semitism and hatred sprung up within him. He also embraced an early form of Replacement Theology error.

Christian brothers and sisters, may I encourage all of us (myself included) to do whatever we can to become and remain close to God. May we not kick against the goads and allow His mighty hand to humble us so that when we are ready, He will lift us up (1 Peter 5:6-9). If we even start to see a sneer come to our lips or a haughty look to our hearts, then we must fall at His feet in confession.

We are saved by His grace alone. We have done nothing to merit salvation and everything to deserve death and hell. Yet, God, in his love and mercy has offered us a path away from eternal death and to Him. The people who died a few days ago at The Pulse were loved by God, yet quite possibly unsaved. They have left this life and their chances of redemption are gone. The only thing that awaits them is God’s wrath.

This should silence us. It should bring us to our knees. It should cause us to want more than anything to be used by God for His salvific purposes to bring others to Him. It should never cause us to feel even a moment’s lightness about the whole thing regarding lost humanity.

Walid Shoebat should be ashamed of himself. Will you pray with me that God will bring Shoebat back to the truth? Will you join me in praying that a deep humility will transform him as it did Moses?

We all need that.
