The Church Becoming a Circus, Part 1

Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective

This subject is personally frustrating for me because for a number of years, we attended and were members of a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) church. During most of the time we were there, things were relatively good. The senior pastor was a very gifted preacher who preached expositionally, going verse-by-verse through the text of Scripture, normally a book at a time. The only thing I disagreed with him on was regarding the “The Purpose Driven Life” series and doctrinal positions of Rick Warren.

In general, that church had the right doctrinal beliefs, the preaching was right on and the music was not that far out in left field somewhere. Though they used electronic instrumentation including drums, bass, keys and electric guitars, the music itself did not overpower the worship or the message. Once the senior pastor left and the choir director followed him a year later, things began to go south very seriously.

We ultimately left and moved to an independent Bible church, with very conservative, fundamental beliefs. I really appreciate this current church. The pastor is even more expositional than the previous senior pastor from our other church and the music used is hymns. Any special music is simply presented either on the piano, violin, flute duet, and/or musical solos or groups. It is absolutely thrilling to be in a house of worship where one joins in actual worship of God Almighty.

Too many approach church very carelessly these days. People do not give God His due. They prefer to see Him as the doting grandfather in the sky, one who longs to give His children whatever they ask for instead of what they actually need.

Much of Christendom has undergone a tremendous change but most fail to see it because they think church should be about having “fun.” If people are having fun, they are happy and glad to be there and will return. If they are happy, they are certainly more willing to open their wallets, aren’t they? They’ll tell neighbors and friends about their church “experience” and others will join with them. It’s all about enjoying going to church on Sundays, isn’t it? However, the loss of reverential fear where God is concerned is alarming to me. If we are going to attend church and worship God, we must do so on His terms, not ours. That seems to apply less and less these days.

The goal of the church is not to make sinners and unchurched people feel comfortable about being there. One goal is to bring us before God to understand how bereft we are without Him and how much we need His salvation, the only true salvation that is available in all of Creation. This doesn’t mean that we should fear being judged by God (if we are saved), but we should absolutely fear doing or saying something that may result in loss of fellowship with Him. The sanctuary of the present day church does not seem to have this in mind, by and large and the fact that it is often referred to as an “auditorium” proves this mindset.

The SBC just celebrated another Pastors Conference. The stated goal of the conference just held was, “…to challenge and encourage pastors and church leaders to be faithful to the calling to serve the Lord in local church ministry…” Really? Pastors need to be encouraged to be faithful to their alleged calling? Okay, I get that, to a degree, but on the other hand, it’s sad that this is actually a goal nowadays because of its many implications.

One of the larger problems within the SBC is their developing views on human sexuality. It’s almost as if the SBC isn’t really clear on God’s Word when it speaks to sexuality and relationships. SBC leaders seem to fail to understand (or deliberately ignore), the basic tenets of Scripture.

Other issues have to do with women preachers within the SBC. Paul is succinctly clear on this, but his words are often twisted to mean something else entirely. It is also done with respect to race relations, with the SBC now holding a women of color conference so that minority women can have their own conference that is separate from white women. Apparently, the belief is that white women cannot relate to minority women in their struggles and issues they deal with in life. Minority women need their “safe space” to vent and share. This is in spite of the fact that we are told in in Christ, there is no Jew or Greek, no male or female, slave or free (Galatians 3:28). What this actually means is that in Christ – those who have salvation – there is no distinction in gender or race because all are completely equal in God’s eyes because of Christ. However, this does not mean that God did not design men and women to have different roles in society and becoming a Christian does not negate these roles at all.

The SBC suffers from unreliable biblical exegesis. They often appear to base their Scriptural understanding on the mood of society. If there’s a tremendous push by the LGBT+ community, leaders within the SBC will often “consider” the pros and cons of that group to determine their position instead of going to Scripture. The same is done with regards to women preachers in the SBC and also within the music often presented at SBC churches and their conferences.

If I were to use one phrase that might best describe the SBC, it would be “embracing change.” It seems that the SBC, like other denominations, is leaving the safety, authority, and anchor of God’s Word to embrace as many people as possible in the world. The tragedy is that they are not attempting to embrace folks in the hopes that they will hear the clear message of salvation either. No, they are embracing people for the sole purpose of simply embracing them and appearing magnanimous and “loving.” They don’t want to appear “judgmental” so they are very careful to rely on political correctness (Cultural Marxism), to cause people in the world to think that they (SBC) are actually loving. In truth, they hate God because they so easily set aside His authoritative Word.

The SBC embraces the world’s philosophies of music, politics, feminism, and the idea that making people “feel” good so that they are thrilled and happy equals salvation. How is any of this Scriptural?

I’ve watched a few videos of the recent SBC Pastor’s Conference (which I’ll comment on in a future article), and all I see and hear is a circus atmosphere. The antics in this videos I saw remind me of a circus ringmasters doing their best to bring people in so that they will become part of the SBC culture in order to grow the church itself (not necessarily Christ’s Bride). In this day and age, huge numbers translates to God’s “blessing.” To that end, the SBC, like other denominations, constantly redefines what God’s Word actually means.

Cultural Marxism has been given opportunity to flourish within the SBC. In fact, Cultural Marxism (commonly referred to as “political correctness”), is the way in which change is made throughout society without necessarily having to change laws, though laws often do change after the groundwork is accomplished through the pressured use of political correctness. This of course is where “peer pressure” is placed on individuals who do not share the opinions of those on the Left regarding human sexuality, conservatism, patriotism, politics, and of course, salvation itself.

Political Correctness/Cultural Marxism is the main weapon used by the Left to intimidate people into changing their views or at least changing what they are willing to say in public. If people can be coerced into not sharing their opinions by being bullied and intimidated into silence, then the Left has won the day. It is a form of fascism, yet the Left denies that’s what they are doing, while accusing conservatives of being fascists. If they can successfully label conservatives as fascist, then they believe this gives them the right to attack, both verbally, and physically if necessary.

This has all been playing out in many institutions throughout the USA and the world for decades. Institutions that were once considered bastions of conservative thought have steadily moved toward the Left. Many have been watching the SBC over the past few decades and noting the tremendous changes that have been taking place there largely due to the leadership of people like Russell Moore, head of SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission. One has to wonder why such a commission is actually needed when the results of that commission seem to be moving the entire SBC denomination away from its biblical foundation?

Recently, Rev. Thomas Littleton attended the recent SBC annual meeting that took place in Dallas, TX. He was ultimately removed by Dallas police after a call was made to them accusing Littleton of making threats in spite of the fact that he came to the meeting with press credentials and simply asked Russell Moore and/or the people who work for him why SBC is getting involved in the Revoice Conference – essentially a vehicle to promote the LGBT+ movement into mainline denominations. It seems clear enough that those connected with Revoice want to silence and blacklist Christians who hold to biblical teaching regarding human sexuality. The fact that Russell Moore goes along with this, promotes it, and will be involved in Revoice tells us that he not only has an ongoing credibility problem, but it seems clear enough he seeks to reimagine the SBC into something else altogether.

I’m clearly reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words of 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (KJV):

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

I’ve got more in an upcoming article that deals with the literal tricks that way too many pastors are using from their pulpits to engage, ensnare, and remake the way people think. We’ll deal with some specifics regarding some churches and just how much of a circus they are creating in an attempt to be all things to all people. When churches do this, key doctrines fly out the window because those doctrines are naturally limiting to some degree. Today’s church appears to want to attract all people and doesn’t speak to the need for change in anyone.

Something has been desperately lost in too many churches today. Is there any true reverence for God? I’m not talking about people who “cry” during worship. Anyone can do that but does that translate to right living according to the parameters set by Scripture? All too often, it does not.

You are explaining what goes on in a building. The church is not the building its the people; the people are the church and each one is intimately connected to Christ as the Head. However once the people (the church) obligate themselves to the building then they must play by the rules. Hence intimacy is lost for the sake of duty to the law of reading, the law of worship, the law of reverence, the law of fellowship etc. The point of intimacy is lost due an obligation to do for God rather than simply be with Him.

Esape the building its killing you. Leave its shackles; then you’ll have something to say to the Body of Christ.

Christendom does not change, because Christ does not change. There is one doctrine and that is Catholic doctrine. If you don’t follow, you are a heretic. Heresy changes with the times. You confuse the two.

        trent

Catholic doctrine IS heresy – 100%

It is the doctrine of gentile “Catholics” at Rome, not the doctrine of those that follow Jesus Christ.

trent why would God move HIS Ecclesial from the eternal city of Jerusalem to the world headquarters of gentile paganism?

Why would HE place those that put Christ to death in charge?

Why would HE place a gentile in charge of HIS HOLY ONES of Israel? the New covenant is with the House of Israel and the House of Judah not with even a single nation or people from any of the gentiles tribes.

I understand you have been indoctrinated since birth – but there is hope, God the Father will soon send His Son to turn Rome into a pile of dust, once the pope and all the priests are gone — then everything you have been taught to trust since birth will be turn to dust. I would think you will listen at that point.

trent did you see Rome is going to allow women and married men into the priesthood along with the homos and pedophiles, won’t that be nice?
