Hezbollah leader: Israeli drones over Lebanon will be downed

Broken windows are seen on the 11-floor building that houses the media office in a stronghold of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019. Two Israeli drones crashed in a Hezbollah stronghold in the Lebanese capital overnight without the militants firing on them, a spokesman for the group said Sunday, saying the first fell on the roof of a building housing Hezbollah’s media office while the second landed in a plot behind it. BEIRUT (AP) — The leader of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah said Sunday that his group will confront and shoot down any Israeli drones that enter Lebanese airspace from now on, raising the potential for conflict amid heightened regional tensions.

Hassan Nasrallah also vowed to retaliate to an Israeli airstrike inside Syria that took place hours earlier, which he said killed two Hezbollah members.

Nasrallah’s speech came after one alleged Israeli drone crashed in a Hezbollah stronghold in south Beirut, landing on the roof of a building that houses Hezbollah’s media office, while another exploded and crashed in a plot behind the building, causing material damage, authorities said.

A Hezbollah spokesman said earlier Sunday that the group did not fire on any of the drones. He said the second drone was likely armed, judging by the damage it caused.

Nasrallah said one of the drones had been flying low among buildings, calling it a military “suicide mission” and “a clear aggression.”

He said allowing Israel to keep flying drones over Lebanon would lead to a similar situation as in Iraq, where a series of attacks there targeting military bases and weapons depot belonging to Iranian-backed militias have left the country on edge. U.S. officials say at least one of them was carried out by Israel.

In Saturday’s strikes near the Syrian capital, Israel publicly stated it was thwarting an imminent drone strike against Israel by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Al Quds Force.

But Nasrallah said the strikes actually hit a Hezbollah rest house, marking a rare acknowledgement of member deaths in Syria by Israeli strikes.

“I tell Israeli soldiers on the border (with Lebanon) to be cautious and wait. Maybe in a day or two or three or four… do not think for a moment that Hezbollah will allow such matters to pass,” he added.

The downed drones and cross-border airstrikes come amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, which backs Hezbollah.

Israeli aircraft continued to violate Lebanese airspace Sunday, flying low over Beirut hours after the drones crashed, raising fears of a wider conflict.

Hezbollah spokesman Mohammed Afif said a small, unmanned reconnaissance drone fell on a building housing Hezbollah’s media office in the Moawwad neighborhood in Dahyeh, the group’s stronghold in southern Beirut.

He said a second drone, which appeared to have been sent by Israel to search for the first one less than 45 minutes later, exploded in the air and crashed in an empty plot nearby, shattering windows in surrounding buildings.

Residents said they heard a loud blast that triggered a nighttime fire.

There was no immediate Israeli comment on the drone incident or Hezbollah’s remarks.

AP journalists on the scene Sunday said the 11-floor building that houses Hezbollah’s media office as well as nearby buildings suffered minor damage and broken glass. On the second floor, where the group has its offices, shattered glass littered the floors and some of the desks were overturned. A portrait of Nasrallah was on a desk littered with glass.

A Lebanese army statement said an Israeli drone came down while the other exploded in the sky over Beirut, causing material damage.

Israeli warplanes regularly violate Lebanese airspace and have struck inside neighboring Syria from Lebanon on several occasions, angering Hezbollah and Lebanese officials, who have complained to the United Nations.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry counted 481 Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace in the past two months and instructed Lebanon’s representative to the U.N. to submit an immediate complaint.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri described the crash of the two drones constitute a threat to regional stability and an attempt to push the situation toward more escalation.

Israel’s late-night airstrike Saturday in Syria, which triggered Syrian anti-aircraft fire, appeared to be one of the most intense attacks by Israeli forces in several years.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, said Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Al Quds force, working with allied Shiite militias, had been planning to send a number of explosives-laden attack drones into Israel.

Conricus said Israel had monitored the plot for several months and on Thursday prevented Iran from making an “advanced attempt” to execute the same plan. Then, Iran tried again late Saturday to carry out the same attack, he said.

He declined to give specifics on what targets the Iranians intended to strike.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitoring group, reported that two Hezbollah members and an Iranian militiaman were killed in the Israeli attack Saturday night.

But a senior commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohsen Rezaei, said the Israeli strikes in Syria did not cause any damage or casualties among Iranian forces there, said “the defenders of Syria and Iraq will soon give an answer” to recent attacks by Israel and the United States.

In recent days, U.S. officials have said that Israeli strikes have hit Iranian targets in Iraq, in what would be a significant expansion of Israel’s campaign targeting Iranian military entrenchment in the region. Iran supports Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as an array of government-allied militias in Syria and Iraq.

Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks in recent years targeting Hezbollah and other Iranian targets in Syria. Israel views Iran as its greatest threat and has said it will not tolerate a permanent Iranian presence in Syria or the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah.

Iran and Hezbollah are key military allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad in that country’s eight-year-old civil war.

Hezbollah and Israel fought a monthlong war in 2006. The volatile border between the two countries, which remain technically in a state of war, has been mostly calm since.

Lebanon Accuses Israel of 2nd Attack in 2

Days

Aug. 26, 2019

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/26/world/middleeast/lebanon-israel-attack.html

BEIRUT, Lebanon — An Israeli drone struck a Palestinian militia base in eastern Lebanon on Monday, Lebanon’s National News Agency said, the fourth time in three days that Israel has been accused of attacking Iranian-backed forces across the Middle East.

The string of events — only one of which Israel has claimed responsibility for — has heightened tensions and raised fears that what has so far remained a shadow war between Iran and Israel and their respective allies could escalate into a more direct conflict.

The strike on Monday hit the base of an Iranian-backed Palestinian militia, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, in the eastern Bekaa Valley. On Sunday, a drone exploded south of Beirut, shattering the windows of an office belonging to Hezbollah, another Iranian-backed group.

Lebanese politicians across the spectrum condemned the attacks and accused Israel of pushing the country toward conflict.

“What happened is tantamount to a declaration of war that allows us to resort to our right to defend our sovereignty, independence and territorial security,” President Michel Aoun of Lebanon told a top United Nations official on Monday, according to a statement released by the president’s office.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri told United Nations Security Council diplomats that the government wanted international help to avoid “any slide toward a serious escalation.”

A United Nations spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said the United Nations had noted the statements by Mr. Aoun and Mr. Hariri but was not in a position to confirm or verify the reported attacks.

“The U.N. calls on the parties to exercise maximum restraint, both in action and in rhetoric,” he said at a briefing on Monday.

The Israeli military declined to comment on either episode.

After the crash of one drone and the explosion of another near the Hezbollah media office on Sunday, the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, vowed that Hezbollah fighters would seek to bring down any Israeli drones they found in Lebanon and strike back for attacks on its fighters in neighboring Syria.

Early Tuesday, Hezbollah changed its description of the first drone, saying that it had been carrying 12 pounds of explosives. The group’s officials had previously said the first drone was for surveillance while the second was laden with explosives.

Hezbollah is a political party represented in the Lebanese government as well as the country’s most formidable military force. It fought a devastating war against Israel in 2006 and has more recently sent fighters to help President Bashar al-Assad of Syria fight rebels seeking to overthrow him.

Israel and Iran have long been staunch enemies, but the conflict has heated up recently as Israel has increasingly attacked armed groups that Iran backs to extend its influence in the Arab world. The recent strikes appear to be an escalation of that effort.

On Saturday, Israel bombed a site in Syria where it said Iranian operatives were preparing to dispatch armed drones to attack Israel. No Iranians were killed, according to Iran and Mr. Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader, but Mr. Nasrallah said two of his group’s fighters were.

On Sunday, in addition to the drone explosion in Beirut, an apparent drone strike in western Iraq killed a leader of an Iranian-backed militia there and wounded a companion, the militia said. The group accused Israel of launching the attack. Other reports indicated that two people had been killed.

The strike on the Palestinian militia base on Monday killed no one, according to a member of the group using the nom de guerre Abu Ratib. He accused Israel of firing four missiles at the base, three of which exploded, apparently trying to kill Khalid Jibril, the son of the group’s leader, Ahmed Jibril, who was not present. The younger Mr. Jibril survived.

Lebanese officials accused Israel of violating the agreement that ended the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Lebanon.

For its part, Israel has long accused Lebanon of not living up to the agreement by allowing Hezbollah to keep its arms.

Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks in the last few years on what it says are Iranian targets in Syria. Israel also carried out at least one strike in a spate of recent attacks on arms storage depots in Iraq controlled by Iranian-backed groups there.

Lebanon slams Israeli drone incursion as

‘threat to regional stability’

Lebanon’s president and prime minister have denounced a recent Israeli drone attack on the country’s soil as a “threat to regional stability,” saying the incursion was meant to fuel tensions.

Aoun added, “Lebanon, which strongly condemns this aggression, will take the appropriate measures after consulting with the relevant authorities.”

Prime Minister Saad Hariri also said for his part that the incident was an open attack on Lebanon’s sovereignty and a blatant violation of United Nations Resolution 1701.

The Lebanese army said on Sunday that two Israeli drones had crashed in a stronghold of the Hezbollah resistance movement in the south of the capital, Beirut.

“Two drones belonging to the Israeli enemy violated Lebanese airspace (at dawn)… over the southern suburbs of Beirut. The first fell while the second exploded in the air causing material damage,” it said in a statement.

The Lebanese army also said that it had sealed off the area and that military police had opened an investigation into the incident.

This picture taken on August 25, 2019 shows forensic investigators of Lebanon’s military intelligence inspecting the scene where two Israeli drones came down in the vicinity of a media center of Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah spokesman Mohammed Afif said that the first drone had fallen on a building housing Hezbollah’s media office in the Moawwad neighborhood of Beirut’s Dahieh suburb.

The second drone, which appeared to have been sent by Israel to search for the first one, had crashed in an empty plot nearby after being detonated in the air, he added.

“The first drone fell without causing damage while the second one was laden with explosives and exploded causing huge damage to the media center,” Afif told the National News Agency.

A handout picture released by the Lebanese General Directorate of General Security on August 25, 2019 shows one of two Israeli drones that came down over a media center of the Hezbollah resistance movement in the south of the capital Beirut earlier in the day.

He said Hezbollah “did not shoot down or explode any of the drones,” adding that the first drone is now in possession of the resistance group.

The spokesman also pointed out that Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah will give an “appropriate” response in a televised appearance later on Sunday.

Hamas condemns drone incursion, too

The Palestinian Hamas resistance movement also denounced the “blatant” Israeli aggression on Beirut’s Dahieh, voicing support for Hezbollah.

PressTV-Syria downs Israeli missiles flying over Damascus

Syrian army intercepts Israeli missiles flying over Damascus, says a report by official news agency SANA.

The incursion came just hours after Israeli forces attempted to hit targets in Damascus in neighboring Syria. The Syrian military said the attacks were unsuccessful and that its air defense systems had intercepted the Israeli missiles.

The Israeli regime said the attacks had inflicted damage on targets related to Iran and allied groups, an apparent reference to Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

Hezbollah has been assisting the Syrian government in its years-long fight against terrorism in the Arab country.

However, it has denied claims it is fighting for Iran in Syria, saying the mission is meant to prevent a spillover of militancy into Lebanon.

The Tel Aviv regime has been cautious over the past years in its military encounters with Hezbollah, a group which seeks a total eviction of Israel from the occupied Palestinian territories.

It was not also clear whether Hezbollah’s downing of the Israeli drones was a swift attempt to respond to Israeli attacks in southern Damascus late on Saturday.

Hezbollah has previously accused Israel of supporting terrorist groups fighting against the Syrian government.

The Lebanese group has provided evidences suggesting that the regime in occupied Palestinian territories have transferred weapons to strongholds of terrorists in Syria.

Lebanese president says Israel drone

attacks on Lebanon amount to ‘declaration

of war’

Lebanese President Michel Aoun says Israel’s recent drone strikes in Lebanon amounts to “a declaration of war” against the Arab country, vowing that Lebanon will defend its sovereignty against the Israeli aggression.

The Lebanese president’s remarks came a day after two drones crashed in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

According to the Lebanese Resistance Movement, Hezbollah, the first drone had fallen on a building housing Hezbollah’s media office in Dahieh suburb. The second drone, which appeared to have been sent by Israel to search for the first one, had crashed in an empty plot nearby after being detonated in the air, it added.

PressTV-‘Hezbollah to counter Israeli drones, shoot them down’

Nasrallah says Hezbollah resistance movement will not tolerate any further violation of the Lebanese airspace by intruding Israeli drones.

Following the drone raids, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary general, vowed in a televised speech that fighters of the movement would counter any further violation of the Lebanese airspace by Israeli drones, warning the Tel Aviv regime to immediately halt such breaches.

Both President Aoun and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri strongly denounced the Israeli aggression and called it a “threat to regional stability.”

PressTV-Israel launches fresh attacks on Gaza, Lebanon

Israel launches fresh air raids on the Gaza Strip and a Lebanese region, allegedly targeting the positions of a Palestinian group.

Late on Sunday, three Israeli drone attacks hit a central region of Bekaa province in eastern Lebanon near the border with Syria, allegedly targeting the positions of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The group, however, said in a statement that the attack had failed to target its posts.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Aoun told Kubish that the strikes in the Dahieh suburbs and in the Bekaa had violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended a July 2006 war between the Israeli regime and Hezbollah.

PressTV-Lebanon’s PM, pres. slam Israeli drone incursion

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri and President Michel Aoun denounce a recent Israeli drone attack as a “threat to regional stability,” which meant to fuel tensions.

Separately on Monday, Hariri said his government wanted to avoid escalation with the Israeli regime, urging the international community to speak out against Israel’s “blatant violation” of his country’s sovereignty.

“The Lebanese government sees it best to avoid any sliding of the situation towards a dangerous escalation but this requires the international community affirming its rejection of this blatant violation,” he said, addressing the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Israel has been cautious over the past years in its military encounters with Hezbollah, a group which seeks a total eviction of the occupying regime from the occupied Palestinian territories.

Hezbollah has previously accused Israel of supporting terrorist groups fighting against the Syrian government.

The Lebanese group has provided evidences suggesting that the regime in occupied Palestinian territories have transferred weapons to strongholds of terrorists in Syria.

Iraqis Call for US Withdrawal…Accuse

Complicity in Israeli Attacks Supporting

ISIS

From: https://www.veteranstoday.com/2019/08/21/israels-secret/

By  Sputnik News – Russia

 August 26, 2019

Although Israel has not officially confirmed it carried out airstrikes in Iraq, the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that could be the case, while anonymous US officials separately confirmed it in an interview with The New York Times.

The Fatah Coalition, an influential bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, has called recent airstrikes on the country, allegedly conducted by Israel, a “declaration of war” by the Jewish state and stated that it holds the US fully responsible for Tel Aviv’s actions. In light of this, the coalition has called for the withdrawal of the about 5,000 remaining American soldiers from Iraq.

The parliamentary bloc also said in the statement that the country reserves the right to respond to Israel over the air raid purportedly conducted by it.

The statement comes the day after a drone airstrike on the Iraqi town of Qaim reportedly killed an Iraqi Shia militia commander. The attack was only the latest in a series of similar air raids, allegedly conducted by the Israeli Air Force (IAF).

Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has not explicitly confirmed the strikes, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vaguely hinted on 23 August that it was possibly an operation by the country’s forces against alleged Iran proxies.

“We’re acting not only if required, we’re acting in very many theatres against a state that seeks to annihilate us. Obviously I’ve given the security forces the order and the operational freedom to do what is necessary in order to disrupt these plots by Iran”, the prime minister said.

The last time the IDF officially claimed responsibility for conducting strikes in Iraq was 1981, when the IAF destroyed the Osirak nuclear power plant near Baghdad.

In a separate report by The New York Times, unnamed senior US officials were quoted as confirming that Israel was behind the recent airstrikes in Iraq as it targeted alleged Iranian weapons transfers to Syria – something that Tehran has repeatedly denied doing.

The officials also said that Tel Aviv pushed “the limits” with its recent actions threatening the continued US military presence in Iraq.

Israel’s aggression against Lebanon: Kevin

Barrett vs. Lee Kaplan

From: https://www.veteranstoday.com/2019/08/26/aggression/

By  Kevin Barrett

 August 26, 2019

Press TV Debate featuring Kevin BarrettVeterans Today Editor

Is Israel, which just attacked three of its neighbors within 24 hours, just a poor put-upon peace-loving nation that everybody hates for no reason at all? That’s the Lee Kaplan version of reality.

In his latest Press TV Debate, Lee Kaplan says he can’t hear the questions. But his responses are exactly the same as in the many Debates in which he does hear the questions. He just keeps repeating “poor innocent little Israel, always attacked by big bad neighbors who hate the Jews.” That’s pretty much the whole extent of his repertoire.

Lee Kaplan, like Israel, is deaf to the voice of the Other. He only hears his own voice. When someone else speaks, to him it is just garbled noise…and probably anti-Semitic too.

Everyone knows that the Zionists are in love with the sound of their own loud, pushy, obnoxious voices, and that when anyone challenges them, they unite in a chorus of ad-hominem vituperation meant to drown out and silence the voice of the Other. Their response to a different viewpoint is to stick their fingers in their ears and chant “la la la we can’t hear you, you horrible anti-Semite, and we’re going to make sure nobody else can hear you either!”

Inviting Lee Kaplan, or any hardcore Zionist, to discuss, debate, or dialogue on anything relating to Zionism is a fool’s errand.

End of article.
