So even though the original 70 year captivity was coming to a close, the more general and overarching captivity (Israel being controlled to some extent by other nations and empires), would continue for another 70 sevens of years or 70 times seven years, which equals 490 years total. I’ve included a chart for visual learners to help break it down and make it easier to understand.

Most conservative scholars believe that the count for this 490 years began with Artaxerxes Longimanus’ decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 445 BC. Gabriel notes three total sections of seven sevens; 7 weeks, 62 weeks and finally 1 week, equaling 70 weeks or 490 years in total.

The first seven weeks (49 years), began with Artaxerxes’ decree. The second division 62 weeks (or 434 years), occurred consecutively, one period right after the other and ended with Jesus’ Triumphal entry into Jerusalem. However, at the end of the 62 week (or 69 weeks/483 years), total, there is clearly a break as seen in Daniel 9:26 (NKJV):

And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

It says “And after the sixty-two weeks…” where Gabriel is pointing out that after the second period of 62 weeks/434 years (or 69 weeks/483 years total), several things happen. Remember “after…” means when the first two periods of weeks have been fulfilled, the following things occur:

  • Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself
  • the people of the prince (who would come later) destroy the city and sanctuary
  • it shall occur like a flood
  • war and desolations will happen until the end

What all this appears to mean is that the second set of weeks (62) ends at Messiah’s triumphal entry because it is after this period that Messiah is crucified so this act happens after the fulfillment of the first two sets of weeks. Jesus was killed in roughly 32 AD and just less than 40 years later, the Roman armies surrounded Jerusalem and totally destroyed the city and the Jewish Temple and killed millions of Jews as well. It was very much like a “flood” of water, which is often a metaphor referencing military action. It seems clear enough that Gabriel was not telling Daniel that the city and sanctuary would be destroyed by an actual flood of water. If that was the case, we’d still be waiting for it.

So the four things noted above in the list all occur after the second set of weeks but before the final week noted in the next verse, Daniel 9:27.

Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.

The “he” in the first line has to refer back to someone already mentioned, correct? If we go by the first antecedent, that would be “the prince” mentioned after the reference to “Messiah.” It seems reasonable to conclude that these two individuals are not the same person, though some believe they are so. The problem is that if we look carefully at “the people of the prince who is to come…” they were the ones who destroyed the city and sanctuary, so this must refer to Roman armies. These people were Gentiles, not Jewish. The “prince” here then cannot refer to Jesus, but it must refer to another and the text tells us that he “is to come…” In other words, the people who destroyed the city of Jerusalem and Temple in AD 70 are of the same ethnicity as the eventual prince who comes along and confirms a covenant with the many for one week (7 years).

Has this happened yet? No, it has not occurred in history yet. Some folks like to point to covenants that have already been created as proof that this has indeed happened. The problem though is that we are still waiting for this “prince” to come who will confirm that covenant globally for the last seven years of prophetic time, as noted by Gabriel. This final seven year period is what is known as the Tribulation period (Revelation 6-19).

This is the short version of the 70 weeks of Daniel 9. In essence, the world is still in the “parenthesis” or period of time after the 69th week and before the 70th week. We really have no clue regarding exactly how long this parenthetical period of time will last before the 70th week begins. God knows specifically when this 70th week will begin and that should be good enough for all of us. People need to stop trying to predict it, in my opinion.

So this sets the picture for us regarding these 490 weeks of years highlighted in Daniel 9. This parenthetical period of time between the second and last set of weeks is what many have labeled the Church Age. Once the Church is gone from this world, the final week can begin because the emphasis on this final 70th week is the “time of Jacob’s Trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7). This will be where God will pour out His wrath onto this world for judgment of unbelievers and purification of the final Jewish remnant as He prepares that remnant to enter into the Millennial Kingdom over which God the Son will reign upon His return.

Now if we jump over to Revelation 4, we see John being told to “come up” to heaven and he clearly states that he was taken to heaven in spirit (seeing things in visions), while his body remained on the earth. While some commentators see this as a nod to the PreTrib Rapture, I do not, simply because his body remained on the earth. However, what John sees in his heavenly visions may mean that the Church is gone from this earth.

Two doctors have told my wife and I that because we had CV and got well, we have ALL the antibodies, not just the spike protein from the jab.

John is brought spiritually into God’s very throne room. He sees the brilliance of God the Father and evidence of God the Holy Spirit as well as of course the Presence of Jesus. John also sees the Seraphim, which are the same created beings from Isaiah 6:1-3. John also sees the 24 Elders which may represent the Church itself. They wear stephanos crowns and are dressed in white. White is often connected to people who have been saved and washed in the blood of the Lamb. This never applies to angelic beings who do not (nor cannot), receive salvation. The angels who never fell have no need of salvation and the angels who did fall are unable to receive salvation.

The picture provided by John regarding heaven and God’s throne room is one of constant adoration and praise to our Living God. When authentic Christians arrive to God’s Presence for all eternity, everything we will do – our words, thoughts and actions – will constantly without fail praise Him! It will not take effort on our part, unlike it does now. We have to actually stop and think about it, to put our minds in the proper perspective of praise. In our future, with glorified bodies and minds, this praise and adoration will be automatic and will never cease. It will be part of our glorified spiritual DNA.

The next chapter, Revelation 5, highlights a very specific scenario and pageantry that occurs in God’s throne room. Had not John been called up to see this, he would not have seen it from heaven’s perspective. Revelation 4 begins the “and after these things” that take readers all the way through to the end of the Tribulation and beyond it. John sees all of it unfolding in the heavenly realms. He sees it from 10,000 feet as it were, so he is able to see so many things occurring throughout the globe that he would never have seen had he remained firmly on the earth.

Sounds like transhumanism to me, but what do I know?

We get a real sense of difficulty that John experiences as he tries to explain in understandable terms what he is seeing and in many cases, has no reference point in his own life’s experiences. We will work our way through all of this over time so I hope you’ll continue to join me in these presentations that will likely take place twice per month over the summer.

By the way, as our pastor reminded all of us this past Sunday, we need to constantly be reminding ourselves that “God wins!” All is going according to His plans and regardless of any troubles we may face in this life, God wins and He wins through us if we will submit to Him. Not doing so just makes it hard on us. The world appears to be going crazy, but it is as the Bible predicts. Lean on Him for wisdom and discernment. Trust Him and He will cause your trust to grow. Do not fear because fear will always lead you astray.
