Four Things FedEx Insurance Doesn't Cover and How To Protect Them in the Mail

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Is it your first time sending something in the mail and you have no idea what you’re doing, then this article is for you. Millions of people are sending products through the mail everyday, and it’s time to add you to that statistic.

There are a few options when trying to figure out how to ship your product, and one of the most used ones is FedEx. They have an extensive list of shipping options that customers enjoy with overnight and ground options. Although when shipping customers are looking for the best deal, and have no loyalty to a specific service.

Before shipping your product, you have to do some research to see if your item fits under their insurance. Unfortunately there are items that can not be shipped under FedEx’s insurance, where you will not get the valued price of an item.

Some items have limitations and do not fit under fedex insurance after a certain price point and they include: jewelry, precious metals; artwork; and antiques. It is time to get in depth with each of these so let’s get started.

How Much Is Your Jewelry Worth?

If something happens to your package you have to file a claim with Fedex. When you file a claim there must be a proof of value, like a receipt of some sort. These claims can be made at a FedEx location or online.

The first product the fedex Insurance does not fully cover is jewelry. Jewelry is usually shipped in envelopes with protective padding inside. Also if there are multiple items being shipped it could be placed in a jewelry box with protective padding.

Jewelry is on the list of items that may exceed the maximum FedEx declared value. The declared value of these items can not exceed $1,000, leaving customers weary to ship valuable jewelry with FedEx.

There are many types of jewelry that can fall under this category. It can include watches, and watch parts. Also costume jewelry or gems and stones. This is why it is hard to ship items like engagement rings with FedEx since they can exceed that $1,000 limit.

Do You Own Precious Metals?

When shipping your product and plan on using fedex insurance you have to fill out a value section on the shipping form. You can pack the item yourself or have FedEx pack it for you. Business owners who have large shipments can have the FedEx truck meet them at a location for convenience.

Precious metal can fall under jewelry but can be a completely different thing as well. Precious metals include gold and silver. People tend to ship scraps of gold that aren’t necessarily considered jewelry but fall under the exemption list.

Silver dust and certain platinum items can be listed under other precious metals sections as well.

Artwork

When shipping with FedEx the company insures the first $100 on your product for free, you will only be charged extra if you claim your product is more than that. Once again this can be processed online or at the physical location.

It is also important to note when packing your product to make sure it is securely and properly done. In case of damage to it in the shipping process FedEx can decide who was at fault. If they find that your package was incorrectly sealed they have the ability to deny your claim for damages.

This is why it is important to follow the guidelines they have for you on their site. There is a long list of guidelines and it also includes some guidelines for specific products including works of art. Artwork can include paintings, drawings, and tapestries. The list also includes sculptures, collectors items and limited edition prints.

Traveling With Antiques

With fedex insurance the pricing can vary depending on the service and the item. They have FedEx Same Day and Same Day City with a max value of $2,000. The first $100 of coverage is free for every product but if you want extra you have to pay.

You can get $300 of coverage for an extra $3 and you can get an extra $100 of coverage for $1. If you have an extremely expensive item and need extra coverage for that you can get $2,000 of coverage for $20 extra.

The extra charges will be extremely helpful in the long run, because you never know what can happen during the shipping process. Items can go missing or damaged, and not buying insurance could become a big regret.

Antiques and collectible items are on the list of things fedex won’t cover over a certain cost. Antiques have the ability to be a lot of things covering many different objects. Some of those include furniture, tableware, and glassware. This doesn’t even cover half of the items that would be considered antiques.

Conclusion

When considering finding a company to keep your products safe during the shipping process can be difficult. It is important to research your options and read the fine print of the rules and regulations.

Fedex insurance has a list of items that they can cover to an extent and it is important to know what these are before shipping out your item. To be properly insured on these is key because you never know when your item will be damaged or go missing.

This is especially important for businesses and when sending personal items that you may never replace. Keep your options open when you are trying to ship expensive items, especially those that exceed the $2,000 limit that FedEx may put on your product.
