56th National Film Awards
Bollywood ruled the 56th National Film Awards Saturday, January 23, 2009, bagging as many as 13 awards, with films like ‘Fashion’, ‘Rock On!!’, ‘Firaaq’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’ winning two awards each in various categories. But Bengali film ‘Antaheen’ won the best feature film award and three more. A summary of the winners is below.
(1) Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’ – won Priyanka Chopra the Best Actress award and got Kangana Ranaut the best supporting actress.
(2) Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Rock On!!’ got the best Hindi film award and Arjun Rampal won best supporting actor
(3) Nandita Das’ ‘Firaaq’ won awards for best editing and best art direction
(4) Several other Bollywood movies walked away with one award each. Namely, ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Roadside Romeo’, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ and ‘Thanks Maa.
(5) Neeraj Pandey’s ‘A Wednesday’ received the Indira Gandhi award for Best First Film of a director
(6) Yash Raj Films’ ‘Roadside Romeo’ got the best animation film award
(7) Dibakar Banerjee’s satirical ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ has been judged the best popular film providing wholesome family entertainment,
(8) Director Nishikanr Kamat’s ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ got the award for best special effects
(9) ‘Thanks Maa’ has got Shams Patel the best child artist award.
Several other films in Tamil, Bengali and other dialects from India won awards. Some of these winners are: ‘Naan Kaduul’ for Best direction, Best Actor Upendra Limaye for Marathi film ‘Jogva’, Bengali film “Antaheen’ won 4 awards including best feature film.
