I Need A Good Cry--Be Right Back

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Sunday, my part of Houston flooded. At our new townhouse, I’ve been waiting for the underground drain installer to put me on his schedule.

Backstory

Because this is a small gated community, I was afraid that we’d have a flooding issue in case of torrential rains. It seems as if the previous owner had built the yard up higher, but whoever did the grading didn’t make sure it had positive drain to the street. Instead, the yard slopes toward the house.

The underground drain installed is supposed to be here Thursday. Sunday, the torrential rain hit. We had just returned from our home in the Hill Country when it started raining. Then the power went off. I went to the front door and looked out to see water lapping inside the courtyard. The rain was backing up in and flowing toward the front door. The water was about 4 inches high in the enclosed patio.

Panic Ensues

We panicked. Donned rain gear and boots, grabbed buckets and shovels. I bailed water and dumped it in the street while darling hubby dug a trench across the yard so the water would be able to run into the street. One of my wonderful neighbors was home, and she grabbed a bucket and joined us.

We kept the water from getting inside the house. With the water level lower and hubby digging another trench, I went to Home Depot and bought 12 huge bags of mulch. Brought them home, and we used them to build a dam across the courtyard entrance.

Now, we’re praying there is no more rain until the drains can be installed and the gutter downspouts tied into the drains.

If you emailed me this weekend or did anything online that requires a response from me, please be patient. I normally answer everything on Monday morning. In this case, though, it’s going to take me a while.

Tomorrow I’ll be back at the doctor’s office. All that intensive expensive physical therapy I had on my arms, shoulders, and back was pretty much a waste of about a thousand bucks. It’s amazing how you can tackle physical labor in a crisis without giving into pain.

The pain comes later. Like right about now.

Takeaway Truth

I’ll be surprised if I can get out of bed in the morning.
