Mystery and Thriller Writing Prompts Freebie of the Month for June 15th
The free writing prompts of the month for June 2021 have a mystery and thriller theme. As always, there are 6 prompts with text and 6 with images only for whatever inspires the writer. One children’s coloring page is included, too, in case one might be needed for a writers’ group.
The police-line-do-not-cross prompt could apply to many stories. There is so much in the news lately a writing piece idea should not be difficult. Many stories begin with a detective arriving at a crime scene to begin gathering clues.
Remember or ever heard of the television show Columbo? This detective seemed to not have a clue yet somehow at the end of every episode the suspect would almost get away with something when he would say, “I just have one more question!” He would nail the suspect for the crime. This prompt would be for writing the last chapter first, a technique used by Margaret Mitchell in Gone with the Win. Have you ever tried to write a book backward?
Ah, the old “leave the gun in the victim’s hand” ploy. Just wipe the gun clean and press his fingerprints all over the gun. Obviously, he is the criminal! No? Maybe this will inspire you to write a story that shows he was not the guilty party.
How many times has the older, wiser detective just retired without solving the biggest case of his life, removed his badge, and then had an ah-ha moment? Well, that is one idea for beginning a story.
Here we have someone waiting in the dark until another person leaves a building. Will she? Could she? What happens?
Maybe children are waiting for the writing group to finish. Here is a coloring page for them.
