Truckers Unite for 2nd National Call in Day for Jason’s Law

Support Safe Truck Parking and Jason’s Law

Mark your calendar for the 2nd National Call in Day, September 15th, requesting support for Jason’s Law and safe truck parking.

For over 10 years the shortage of truck parking has been addressed many times, including confirmed studies presented by the FMCSA and DOT. Although alotted funds for this ongoing safety issue has been placed in general transportation bills, very little has been done in the past to address and resolve the problem, as funds have usually been used from this general fund for other purposes.  By passing Jason’s Law, we can be assured that 20 million dollars a year for 6 years ( 120 million total)  would be specifically allocated towards the maintaining and creation of safe and adequate truck parking, thus eliminating the funds from being used for any other purpose.

To make matters worse, states are now closing many of their rest areas in attempts to save money.  This means the truck parking shortage will worsen if something is not done about it soon! The repercussions of this could be tragic, both for the safety of all those driving on the highways and for the CDL truck drivers themselves, as was the case for Jason Rivenburg, who was shot and killed because he parked in an abandoned gas station in order to find refuge.
Other consequences, if lack of parking is not addressed, will be the endangerment of other motorists on the road, as overly fatigued drivers will be driving along side of them. Another safety hazard that will increase from parking shortages;  more trucks will be forced to park on entrance and exit ramps.

The purpose of this day, Wednesday, September 15th 2010, is to call our representatives requesting that they support Jason’s Law,  which was presented to both the House by Congressman Paul Tonko ( bill HR 2156)  and to the Senate by Senator Charles Schumer ( S 971)

We will also be calling Senator Schumers and Gillibrands office direct and asking them what is being done within the Senate to ensure the support of S971 which was previously submitted
Call Gillibrand’s office (202) 224-4451
Senator Schumer’s office (202) 224-6542

On this same day, Hope Rivenburg will be making her 3rd trip to Washington, knocking on “politician doors”, in hopes  to gain more support and end any more truck drive deaths  due to lack of available parking and being forced to park in unsafe and isolated areas such as her husband Jason did.

If Hope can make a trip to Washington for all of us, we surely can pick up a phone for her and us.
