11. Spanish Colonial School, late 18th/early 19th c., “The Virgin of Sorrows”, oil on canvas, unsigned, inscribed “Mater Dolorosa”, 20 1/2 in. x 16 1/2 in., framed. Price: $805.20

13. A Russian Icon of a Warrior Saint, late 19th/early 20th c., possibly St. George, tempera on heavy wood panel, 14 7/8 in. x 11 in.; together with a later gilt easel stand. Price: $366.00

16. Herbert Dicksee (British, 1862-1942), “Recumbent Lion by a Lake”, 1891, etching and drypoint on paper, pencil signed, signed in plate, sight 18 1/4 in. x 30 1/4 in., matted and framed. Price: $488.00
Note: This imposing print is essentially a variant on “The Lion of Lucerne” by Bertel Thorvaldsen (Danish, 1768-1844), carved as a memorial (also on the shores of a lake) in 1820-21 to the Swiss Guards of the French Royal Household, for their heroic 1792 defense of the Palais des Tuileries, Paris.

17. Herbert Dicksee (British, 1862-1942), “Lioness with Cub by a Lake”, etching and drypoint on paper, pencil-signed and initialed in the plate, sight 17 in. x 27 1/8 in., matted and framed. Price: $488.00

21. A Fine Antique Print of Napoleon, “Napoleon, On Board H.M.S. Bellerophon, July 23rd, 1815″, engraving, after Sir William Q. Orchardson, R.A. (1832-1910), etched by L. J. Steele, sight 27 1/4 in. x 37 in., attractively matted and framed. Price: $732.00

23. Continental School, 19th c., “Rosalie Julie Von Bonar”, watercolor miniature on ivory, unsigned, sight 3 in. x 2 1/4 in., label en verso reads, “Rosalie Julia Von Bonar, King Ludwig’s Favorite”, in a brass easel frame; together with C.D. Fredericks (German, late 19th c.), “Gentleman with a Red Beard”, watercolor miniature on ivory, signed lower left, illegible notation lower right, 3 1/2 in. x 2 3/4 in., in a brass frame. Price: $244.00

41. A Pair of American or English Brass Spring-Loaded Candlesticks, 19th c., with glass baluster-form storm shades with ruffled rims, round foot with floriform decoration, height 13 1/2 in. Price: $122.00

97. Andrew John Henry Way (American/Baltimore, 1826-1888), “Still Life with Pearls, Portrait and a Vase”, oil on canvas, signed lower right, stamped “Kellinger McCoy…Baltimore” en verso, “A. Miller”, New York label affixed to frame, 16 1/8 in. x 12 1/8 in. Price: $2440.00
Note: Andrew John Henry Way began his career as a portraitist, but under the influence of artist Emanuel Leutze, decided to devote himself entirely to still-life painting, for which he quickly “acquired a reputation for his adroit rendering of various species of fruit”, among other subjects. With careful, scientific precision, lustrous palette and dexterous handling of the reflective qualities of light, Way’s pursuit of art in the Dusseldorf style of still-life painting was so successful that he became one of the most beloved and sought-after of Baltimore’s mid-century artists.

102. Laura Wheeler Waring (American/New York, 1887-1948), “Perusing the National Gallery”, 1940, watercolor on paper, signed lower left, inscribed in part “Laura Wheeler Waring(L) and her sister Mrs. Mary Alice McNeil(R) in the National Gallery, Washington, DC”, and with a “Langman Gallery, Jenkintown, Penna” label en verso of backing board, 9 1/4 in. x 11 in., matted and framed. Price: $3660.00
Note: The work of African-American artist Laura Wheeler Waring has been widely acclaimed; her portraits include such illustrious sitters as W.E.B. Du Bois and Marian Anderson. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Waring was the daughter of Reverend Robert Wheeler, who ensured that his children were well educated. Waring therefore graduated not only from Hartford High School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but she also studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. This self-portrait, depicting the artist in the National Gallery, highlights Waring’s education and her continuing dedication to studying art, something that set her apart from amateur artists of her day.

116. A Newcomb College Art Pottery Matte Glaze Bowl, c. 1913-15, modeled with a pair of shells and a molded rim, with mottled blue-green underglaze, base marked with Newcomb cipher, Joseph Meyer’s potter’s mark, shape no. 259, C for buff clay body and “Craig” in sgraffito, height 3 3/4 in., diameter 8 3/4 in. Price: $1220.00

195. A Near Pair of Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Rouleau Vases, 19th/early 20th c., cylindrical bodies and necks decorated in imitation of cloisonné enamel with floral baskets and shou on gilt diaper grounds, the sloping shoulders and tapering circular feet with stylized floral sprays and C scrolls, bases with Qianlong seal marks, height 9 1/2 in. Price: $976.00
