Career tips: How to look presentable for a job interview?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Remember: you are the person they need

The most important part of getting a job is a job interview. This is your time to shine – you are supposed to show your employer that you are the right kind of person for this job; that you are what he/she has been looking for. In order to achieve this, you will need a little preparation. First, you need to think of some questions commonly asked on interviews and prepare answers which will be precisely what your employer wants to hear. Of course, you can never know what will be the ultimate outcome of that interview, but it is up to you to make an effort to get that job if you really want it.

A lot depends on your attitude. You should be pleasant but not too comfortable and chatty because that might make you look like someone who isn’t serious enough. Think of the best way to answer any question – and think of this question from a little bit different perspective. You will need to think of what your boss needs and what his/her company needs. This is the easiest way of preparing yourself for this. Be confided, and make sure that the person who is interviewing you gets the impression that you really want that job and that you yourself think that you are the perfect person for that job. A firm handshake and your body’s posture is also important, pay attention to that too.

It is really important that you don’t run late on your interview. This will say a lot about you. If you are late, you will be characterized as someone who is irresponsible and unprofessional – and there is not a chance you are going to get this job. An act like this will make them discard you immediately, because, if you dared to be late on your interview, is it really going to be different if you get the job? No one likes his employees not showing up on time. Time is money and every employer likes when someone respects his/her time.

Job-interview jitters

This can only be a flaw and this can only help you not get the job. So, you will need to forget about jitters. Nervousness and uncertainty can be quite stressful and result in stuttering, sweating, speech blockage and even fainting. But, you don’t want to show your future boss that you are a weakling, but completely the opposite. Compose yourself and everything will go smoothly. Don’t think about some negative outcomes of this, think of the best ones. If you need a little preparation, gather your friends and family and practice your speech or act a part of your conversation imagining you are speaking to your employer. This can be quite helpful.

Physical appearance

Physical appearance is not that important, but if you are applying for a position where you are going to have a lot of contact with people, sell things or something that will depend on you just communicating or persuading others, then your employer might take into consideration your looks as well. Here are some tips on how to improve your physical appearance for a job interview, but still manage to look professional.

  • Teeth

When you are speaking to someone, there are some key points on your face that will always draw someone’s attention: eyes and teeth. Making these impeccable will make establishing eye contact with your employer which is really important on a subconscious level. For all those women out there, I have some advice – just put a little bit of mascara and you are set for your interview. But, when it comes to teeth, if you don’t have the white and shiny teeth, you might want to visit a dentist before your interview comes. Yes, I am serious. Teeth whitening can make your smile beautiful and trust me, this can be a big plus.

  • Clothes

You need to wear formal clothes that are decent. No short skirts or dresses, shorts, t-shirts or sweatpants and sweatshirts. This isn’t desirable at all. Dress simply: a pair of pants and a simple shirt (make sure that it isn’t see-through or deep cleavage if you are a woman). Don’t wear too much jewelry and some funny accessories. Keep it simple, grown-up like and clean. A tip: don’t put too much perfume or cologne, but don’t show up all sweaty and smelly either.

  • Make-up

Just a touch of makeup is enough. Don’t look like you are going to a party – just use a bit of foundation and powder to add freshness to your face, a little bit of mascara to make your eyes seem less droopy and a little blush to complete the picture.

  • Hair

Brushed, freshly blow-dried hair or a simple pony-tail if you are a woman and if you are a man, then just add a drop or two of gel and comb it – you are done. No need for some extravagant hairstyle for this occasion.

When I got a job, Mr. Simon helped me a lot! If you don’t know who it is, I’ll explain. This is an artificial intelligence which allows you to practice communicating with potential employers. He asks random questions, and you answer him:) After the work is done, you can listen to your voice recordings and save/delete them.
