If you just want a place to relax in the summer, it does not have to be very big, but if you will be hosting parties at the verandah, then you need to get a bigger space. Once you have an idea of how you will be using the verandah, you can then figure out its size. 
2. Budget – When planning any kind of construction work, you must consider the cost of the project.  Have your builder give you projections that you can work with that include the size of the verandah, the type, labor costs, and cost of materials used. Be sure to account for all costs so that you don’t have to stall mid-project.
3. Local permissions – Be sure to get the construction permits required by your local authorities before embarking on any project. You will find that they vary from one local council to the next, so be sure to counter check what your council requires and adhere to that.
4. Type of Verandah – You may not know this, but there are different types of verandahs to choose from. Prior to installation, you need to check out the different types available and find out which one fits your property best. Some of the different types include the following:
   • Gable verandah – These work really well if you will be using your verandah to entertain.  They can be combined with a pergola or have a flat roof.
   • Sunroof – This type of verandah uses technology to open up beams electronically so that the sun can shine through. When the sun becomes too hot or when it is raining, the sunroof is closed. This type of verandah is ideal for any kind of weather.
   • Curved roof – If you are looking for something stylish, then you should definitely consider the curved roof verandah. The look is classy and sophisticated and your home will benefit from this look.
   • Heritage verandah – If you want to create length, then this is the style to go with. It offers lots of versatility.
   • Pergola – These are mainly used in backyards to create the feel of openness while providing shade and a place to relax. You can have it open or closed, particularly if you will be out there in the rain. Having creepers and other climbing plants grow on it adds greenery to the pergola.
   • Gazebo – This one works really well if you are looking for glamour. It is fantastic if it comes with a hexagonal roof and some bay windows.
