6 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Product Review Writer

Writing product reviews is not as easy as you may imagine. It takes more than just listing your features if you want to get prospects interested in what you have to offer. You also need to know how to frame your description so that your audience sees it as the best solution to their problem. And, that can take years of experience and knowledge.

That’s where a professional product review writer can make a difference in your conversion rates.

But, how do you find one that understands what your product is about, get the tone of your business and can translate everything into an engaging description?

Here are some of the questions you should ask before hiring a product description writer.

1. How Much Do You Charge and What Do You Offer?

Probably the first question you’re going to ask (and a very important one if your budget is limited,) is the price of the writing services reviews service. Make sure you learn what they offer for the price you’re paying.

Be as specific as possible! Ask about the length of the articles, whether research is included in the cost, if they will include relevant external links, if they are responsible for coming up with keywords for SEO, and who will provide the visual resources.

2. How Will I Pay You?

Just like the question above, this will and should be one of the first things you need to set up from the very beginning. If you’re working with a freelance writer, make sure you keep track of the invoices in a spreadsheet and use PayPal or any other similar payment system for payments. That way, it will be more difficult for you to forget paying your writers.

If you’re hiring freelance writers through websites like Upwork, you won’t have to worry about payment process details, since they will be the ones to handle it.

3. How Many Drafts Will You Provide?

Here’s a sensitive subject for freelance workers since many of them face difficulties when it comes to the client’s expectations of how the collaboration should be. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Just have a professional conversation with the writer you want to hire and agree to some fair terms for your collaboration.

Ask them how they usually work and what the number of provided drafts is. If you feel the number is too small, discuss and see if you can negotiate to include more in the price. Otherwise, if you’re ok with the number, make sure to mention in your contract the number of drafts included in the price and the costs of any extra drafts you require, in case you need them in any situation.

4. What’s the Execution Time?

If your business is focused on content marketing, then you probably have a marketing calendar full of deadlines. Make sure you discuss these deadlines beforehand to ensure both of you are on the same page. Explain what the calendar timeline is and then agree upon a reasonable execution time, depending on the writer’s availability. Don’t forget to ask if the execution time changes in case they receive multiple projects or if you request different drafts or even minor tweaking.

5. Can You Show Me Some of the Work You’ve Done?

Whenever possible, ask if you can see some examples of their previous work. That is unless you already know this person and are sure of the quality of their work. You might also want to talk to the references provided in their resume or read any available reviews from people that have previously worked with them.

6. Who Will Own the Work and Who Will Be Named Author?

What type of writer will you be working with? Are they a ghostwriter or do they want credit in the form of including their name on the provided work? Make these conditions clear from the beginning.

Ownership is another issue you should discuss. If the articles are important, make sure you will own the content that the writer provides you.

Hiring a product review writer can turn out to be a great decision for your blog if you lack time to do it yourself or if you feel you’re just not skilled enough. Writing reviews is more than just making a list of the specs and inserting a few thoughts here and there. So if you want to offer real value to your readers, make sure you hire the right people for the job!
