John Lennon Album Signed for His Killer Up for Auction

An historic copy of Lennon’s Double Fantasy album is going up for auction by Goldin Auctions today. It’s the album John Lennon signed for Mark Chapman hours before he was murdered by him. The tragedy happened outside The Dakota on Central Park West in New York City in December 1980.

The album was part of the evidence collected by the New York Police in their investigation into Lennon’s murder. It still has their markings. Goldin Auction says bidding will open at $400,000.

Chapman’s Statements

In his statement during his parole hearing at New York’s Wende Correctional Facility, Chapman said, “I assassinated him, to use your word earlier, because he was very, very, very famous and that’s the only reason and I was very, very, very, very much seeking self-glory, very selfish.

And after his request was denied he said, “I just want to reiterate that I’m sorry for my crime. I have no excuse. This was for self-glory. I think it’s the worst crime that there could be to do something to someone that’s innocent.”
