From $9.99 hand registration to $4,495 domain sale, just don’t think of it as normal

Today I got an email from Afternic that I always love to see. Even though I’ve been investing in domain names for almost 14 years, emails like this never get old. At the same time, as I learned early on, and as many new investors learn the hard way, emails like this do not come every day, or even every month unless you’re really lucky. At the same time, when they do happen, it feels good and it can also help to either validate or invalidate an investment hypothesis.

For me this is just further confirmation of something I’ve been pretty laser-focused on for years now two-word .COMs. While you might see me writing about NFTs and crypto a lot more, that’s because I’m super interested in them and having a blast learning. You’ll continue to see a lot more from me about NFTs and crypto, I’m exploring and my blog is all about learning and sharing new and exciting things like this!

That being said, when it comes to investing in digital assets, domains are still my main squeeze, and two-word .COMs are my jam. This particular domain was actually a name I hand-registered for $9.99 at last year. Also while technically this is a $4,495 sale, never forget about commission when calculating your ROI.

Okay, now you’re probably wondering why I called out the fact that this isn’t normal in the headline of my blog post. Well, that’s because it’s not normal. I think too many people highlight a single sale like this and then say, “all you need to do is hand register the right names and boom – you’ll be printing money in no time.”

The reality is (at least for me), it’s pretty darn rare that a domain I hand register sells at all. I don’t hand register much as I focus on buying expired domains. There are some awesome people out there like Alex Verdea that really know their stuff when it comes to flipping hand regs. And I think Alex will agree, if we could all register domains and then sell them for $4,500 all day long, we’d all be doing it.

Still, it feels good and continues to strengthen my love for two-word .COMs. Just don’t let anyone tell you that sales like this are easy to mechanize and repeat, because they aren’t…
