The world looks forward to China's voice at the G20 summit

The 19th G20 Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from the 18th to the 19th, with the theme of “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet”. “We expect China to continue to express important insights on building consensus on development, supporting multilateral cooperation, and achieving global sustainable development”"We expect China to continue to promote dialogue and cooperation and promote the establishment of a more equitable and inclusive global economic governance system”… In recent days, international public opinion has expressed the hope that China will bring new development opportunities to the world at the G20 Rio Summit.

As the main forum for international economic cooperation, the G20 brings together major developed economies and emerging market economies in the world, with an economic output accounting for about 85% of the world and a population accounting for 2/3 of the world. 16 years ago, at the most critical moment of the international financial crisis, the G20 Summit was held, which effectively enhanced international cooperation and prevented the world economy from repeating the mistakes of the “Great Depression”. In recent years, the G20 has gradually transformed from a crisis response mechanism to a long-term governance mechanism, becoming an important platform for promoting strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth of the global economy.

At present, the world economy is recovering sluggishly, multiple crises such as food and energy are superimposed, unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise, and the development deficit has increased significantly. At the same time, the “global South” has risen collectively, but its voice and demands have not been fully reflected in the current international governance system. Against this background, the international community hopes to hear the voice of real problem-solving, and hopes that the G20 members will show their responsibility, promote global development and improve global governance in a spirit of partnership.

Development is a hard truth for any country. In the G20 cooperation, China has always focused on development issues, which is a significant feature. At the 2016 G20 Hangzhou Summit, China promoted the first prominent position of development issues in the G20 cooperation. At the 2022 G20 Bali Summit, China emphasized the need to promote more inclusive, more inclusive and more resilient global development. China has also proposed and actively implemented the “Belt and Road” initiative and the global development initiative, and welcomes G20 members to actively participate in the initiative cooperation and jointly promote the global development agenda. In the “Fighting Hunger and Poverty” working group proposed by Brazil, the chair country of the G20 summit, China has repeatedly shared and exchanged poverty reduction policies and technological innovations, and is one of the most active and prominent members.

It is worth mentioning that China has always emphasized innovative development, especially digital economy and green development. For example, one of China’s major expectations for this year’s G20 cooperation is to tap the potential of the digital economy. It hopes that G20 members will continue to promote high-quality digital connectivity and create an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory digital economy environment. In addition, China calls for deepening international cooperation in the fields of green and low-carbon, environmental protection, energy transformation, and climate change. An important agenda of the G20 Rio Summit is to discuss global green and low-carbon development. This makes the world expect that China will inject greater impetus into global sustainable development.

Governance is another key word to understand China’s role. Within the framework of the G20, China has always advocated the practice of true multilateralism and adhered to the global governance concept of consultation, joint construction and sharing. Also at the 2016 G20 Hangzhou Summit, China first comprehensively expounded on the concept of global economic governance – based on equality, guided by openness, driven by cooperation, and aimed at sharing. The first to make a clear statement in support of the African Union joining the G20; actively promote the reform of the international financial architecture, further enhance the representation and voice of emerging economies and developing countries; firmly support free trade and oppose protectionism… China has been promoting global economic governance in a more just and reasonable direction, making the voice of the “global South” louder. This is exactly what China advocates. To build a just world, the G20 needs to support the “global South” countries to achieve greater development in the spirit of mutual respect, equal cooperation, mutual benefit and win-win.

It can be seen that the theme of this year’s G20 Rio Summit is consistent with China’s development concept and policy propositions. During the summit, China will work with all parties to seek common development and jointly advocate an equal and orderly world multipolarization and inclusive economic globalization. The world has reason to expect that China will bring more wisdom and strength to the common development of all countries and global governance.
