In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, legendary Canadian ice hockey commentator, Don Cherry, made some comments on air questioning the dedication of immigrants to Canadian values.

A distinct example he gave was the contrast between how Remembrance Day, an international day to honor the heroes who gave their lives to protect the West in the two world wars, in rural Canada vs. urban Canada.

If you’ve kept up with the political culture in Canada these days, this is the equivalent of publishing a cartoon of Muhammad in an Iranian newspaper.

Cherry noted that very few people in downtown Toronto wore poppies—a symbol of Remembrance Day that are sold to raise money for Canadian veterans.

He remarked:

You people … love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy. These guys paid for your way of life, the life you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price.

These comments were met with monstrous backlash from enraged journalists, pundits, and viewers.

They called for his head, and his head they got, proverbially speaking.

Sportsnet confirmed that Cherry had been fired from Hockey Night in Canada on November 11, 2019.

Faith Goldy, an outspoken conservative pundit in Canada and one-time candidate for mayor of Toronto, was one of the few brave enough to back up Cherry’s comments.

She tweeted, “Our nation’s love of hockey is, in part, what hurts us. Our eyes affixed to the TV, we do duty, loyalty, and in-group preference in teams as opposed to by country. Don Cherry dared to discuss immigration during a hockey game and got fired. This is the wake up call Canada needs.”

If the western world were not obsessed with political correctness, Cherry’s comments would have been valid ones and could have paved the way for a fair and honest conversation about the dramatically changing cultural landscape in Canada.

Mass migration has become one of the most polarizing issues in the West due to a wide-range of concerns ranging from security to economic impact.

On top of that, there’s also questions about social alienation as large waves of migrants come and effectively displace traditional communities.

Political scientist Robert Putnam’s book Bowling Alone argues that diversity is not a strength and in fact erodes social trust and creates social tension in many communities.

This is important because mass migration is part of the sacred religion of multiculturalism that has taken over the West during the last few decades.

Additionally, Cherry’s firing shows how ingrained outrage mobs are in Western culture. Free speech, no matter how controversial it is, is something that should be embraced by both political actors and civil society.

Once that falls apart, a society is well on the path to PC tyranny.
