Signers Go over 500 for “A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation”

At about 10 pm on May 30^th, SBC Today published “A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation.” At no other time that we know of has any such doctrinal statement been presented and signatures of affirmation sought completely online, without receiving an initial impetus or signatures from a conference or meeting, or the support of an existing organization. New signatures have been coming in every day, and in less than two weeks, there have already been over 500 signatures so far from every level of SBC life.

The signers include four members of the committee who penned the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 (plus the President who appointed them to do so). The list includes six former SBC Presidents and seven state Baptist convention executives. The signers list includes over 200 pastors, as well as numerous directors of missions, evangelists, church staff members, and lay ministers. It includes the entire range of SBC churches, from numerous small churches to a group of Mega Metro large churches. The pastors who are signatories serve churches in 28 states. The largest group of pastors from any state are from Georgia (currently with 32 pastors signed), closely followed in order by Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Kentucky. As of this moment, there are currently 532 who have signed the statement, though the count increases hour by hour.

The Statement has drawn an immense response at SBC Today, as it has in dozens of other blogs and news sources (including a Baptist Press article). Since posting the Statement, SBC Today in just 13 days has had over 30,000 unique visitors making over 50,000 visits with over 100,000 pageviews. SBC Today has soared to being third of all Religion blogs in the English speaking world (behind only Rachel Held Evans and CNA News), as ranked by the Technorati blog rating system.
