Gospel: Matthew 20:17-28

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,
18 ”Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
19 and deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zeb’edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something.
21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”
22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
26 It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave;
28 even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

This passage contains a slight error in translation. An error so small to have been noticed for centuries. This slight error has been repeated even in the Douay-Rheims.

On Mat. 20:23 the vernacular says “….My chalice indeed you shall drink;…” (DRV), or “You will drink my cup,…” (the version of this article).
In reality Our Lord said: “Of My chalice indeed…”, or according to the version of this article, it should be: “You will drink of My cup…”

The “of” draws a distinctive separation between Jesus Christ, who did indeed drink the entire chalice (or cup), because He alone could take all the sins of the world upon Himself, while the two apostle would be able to merely take a sip of that chalice.
This error in translation has led in the false belief, that the greatest apostles, martyrs and saints were equal to the Christ, while in reality, those blessed souls were only participating into His suffering for the redemption of the world.
In fine, this Matthew’s chapter is a great lesson of humility, besides being a covenant to the faithful in Jesus Christ.

From the source of the Biblia Sacra Vulgata translated by St. Jerome.
      Secundum Mattheum 20: 23: (…. calicem quidem meum bibetis…)

It is to be added that the error in translation, explained above, was pointed to my miserable typing hand from reading the Cahiers of Maria Valtorta.
Maria Valtorta was an Italian mystic of the XXth Century who wrote narratives from vision of the life of Christ or who merely took dictations mostly from either Our Lord Jesus Christ, or the Blessed Virgin, or from her guardian angel named Azaria.

This mystic of the last days brings many revelations which complete the mosaic made sketched by the gospel. The extraordinary work of this victim soul changes nothing to the Sacred Scriptures, but only make it more understandable. Also reading Maria Valtorta, brings the reader back to the time of the primitive Church.
Maria Valtorta, is currently, as expected, the subject of vicious cabals from all venues.

The complete work of Maria Valtorta is not yet translated into the English, but in case an English reader is interested, the e-translator may allows some readings.
