Christian Assumptions: Problems of Common Views without a Deeper Look?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Christ’s letter to the last church in Revelation 3 seems negative. We like the idea that Christ is knocking at our door, but blind and naked is a bad combination for getting to the door, and naked means we aren’t ready to open, and it also means the loins are not girded with truth, Eph 6:14. “Rich and increased with goods” fits most of western Christianity.

We tend to be shaped by common views or authority opinions, without considering why it may not be right. Here are some assumptions that maybe we should consider…

#1. An assumption that the biblical end-times are years away. It may be so, but maybe not. “The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night, for when they shall say, ‘Peace and safety,’ sudden destruction comes…” 1Thess 5:2,3. Paul is saying that end-times can come suddenly, and the UN theme for last year included the words, peace and safety. Lots of signs support trouble as impending.

#2. Another assumption is that “the Bridegroom comes” in Matthew 25 is about His coming in the sky (so we can eat cake in heaven?) We overlook the Old Testament model when God executed judgment on Egypt and took His people to a covenant, later saying “I am married to you,” Jer 3:14.

The Bridegroom’s coming to Egypt meant calamity and Paul included the Exodus when he said, “all those things happened to them for our examples …ends of the world.” 1Cor 10:1,11

We aren’t seeing how the US is like Egypt–they killed babies (Exodus 1) and the US has aborted 60 million. Egypt enslaved Israel and corporate US has enslaved most people with alcohol, tobacco, drugs that we call healthcare, but they are a leading cause of death. People are in bondage to food, fashion, fiction, gambling, music, sex, perversion, TV, violence, etc.

History will repeat and we need to understand more before it happens.

#3. Millions of Christians who saw the ‘Left Behind’ movies or read the books that were listed as fiction, still believe “one taken” is a rapture and “the other left” if he wasn’t ready.

In Luke’s account the disciples asked “where Lord?” to which Christ replied, “where the body is, there will the eagles be gathered.” Luke 17:37.  It’s good not to be taken, and like the previous parable, the Flood took them all away; it’s better to be left.

#4. Many US Christians think they will be raptured before the tribulation because Christ said He will keep us from “the hour of temptation that will come upon all the world.” They believe it refers to the tribulation in Rev 3:10, but they overlook Acts 14:22 which says, “we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”

The apostle Paul shows the rapture occurs “at the last trumpet” in 1Cor 15:52, and there are 7 trumpets in Revelation 8 and 9 before the kingdoms become Christ’s, Rev 11:15. Those trumpets are initiated by a great earthquake in Rev 8:5.

the rapture conundrum goes away if you believe that there are three raptures:

      1) Pre-trib, thief in the night, no warning rapture that can happen at any time (barley harvest)
      2) Mid-trib, when the two witnesses are resurrected and raptured…this brings the true church, the bride of christ, into the marriage feast in heaven (wheat harvest)
      3) Post-trib, when the Lord returns and catches up those who are alive and remain (grape harvest)

Good Christians rage to stroke level blood pressures defending one or the other. Some rage that anyone who believes in any rapture is a shameless heretic. It gets so bad that the Holy Spirit sometimes reminds you of Psalm 2:2. What if all three are correct? If so, so many problems interpreting those scriptures go away. Think about it.

What about the last trumpet? The rapture occurs at the last trumpet. In Numbers it describes when the shofar trumpet must be blown. The shofar is blown at the beginning of a period and at the end of a period. The last trumpet of the year is also simultaneously the first trumpet of the new year when blown on Yom Teruah, the Feast of Trumpets. This precedes the pre-trib rapture. No, I don’t know the day or the hour (much less the year), but the bible seems to point to the new moon festival of the feast of trumpets as the most likely time of the rapture. We’ll see.

jknbt: Thank you for taking time to share an interesting view. The last of seven churches is described in Revelation 3 as lukewarm with materialism, “wretched, miserable, poor, BLIND and naked.” Rev 3:17. Rather than expect Christ’s eagerness to rapture this group to heaven, we should expect trials and trouble to grow us as James 1 suggests. God says, “the BLIND will I bring by a way they know not” (Isa 42:16) and I don’t think that means to heaven. That church where Christ “knocked” ended in an earthquake that destroyed the city of Laodicea, a word that means people (Laos) judging (dicea or decree) The US is entering a time of judgment like Egypt that had 10 plagues, even this week with all stock market gains for the year being erased and news of yet another hurricane that is expected to dump moisture for a nor’easter in the Northeast, not to mention Hurricanes Michael and Florence, the unprecedented fires in Californian and fiery volcanoes in Hawaii–things “reserved unto fire for the day of judgment,” 2 Peter 3:7. I think the “rapture” of the two witnesses may just mean Moses and Elijah who have the power to shut the heavens and turn water to blood in Rev 11:6. This leaven a post-trib rapture at the last trumpet. There are further explanations re the rapture that you may appreciate at http://chooseabetterdestiny.com/rapture.htm One that is not mentioned is that the devil has accused God of making a law that no one can keep. Christ did, but maybe He had some advantage? God will have a group of people (144,000) who will live through the worst of times and not deny or betray God. For their vindication of His character and law, “He will make them ruler over all that He has” Lk 12:44

I would not be surprised if the Father schedules the rapture on Sunday nite at 7:00 pm on super bowl sunday. There are laodiceans out there who will turn down the rapture just so they can watch the game and have a few more beers.
See Matt 22:1-9 and Luke 14:15-24. These people would rather drink beer and watch football than honor the Son at his wedding feast. They deserve to be left behind.

jknbt & all: Thank you for your comments. Christ’s wedding parables ALL have Passover imagery, like the Last Supper seen in Luke 12:35-37. “Loins girded goes back to Passover in Exod 12:11. “Watch” means be awake as they were in Exod 12:10. Christ’s girding Himself to serve us in Lk 12:37 is what He did at the Last Supper. The cry at midnight in Matt 25:6 is an echo of Exod 12:29,30 and the wedding feast at Passover that the king’s servants invite people to is the feast of unleavened bread which may be why the invitation is scorned in Matt 22.

But it’s not about crackers. Christ said, “Beware the leaven of the Pharisees, and He meant their doctrines, Matt 16:12. Church leaders have leavened the Bread so that we don’t think those times appointed by God are relevant now, but mo’ed– appointed times come from Gen 1:14, before any Jews or law was given!

We don’t need to do Jewish ceremonies, but the Lord’s Supper is the Christian extension of His appointed time. Paul understood this when he kept Passover with Greek believers in Philippi (Acts 20:6) and Corinth (1Cor 5:8) and he said those times “are shadows of things to come.” Col 2:17.

When the end-times begin for us, we should be watching (a word that offers protection in Matt 24:43; Rev 3:3; 1Thess 5:2-6) when judgment falls with “sudden destruction…as travail on a woman with child.” Egypt travailed at Passover to birth God’s firstborn, Exod 4:22. For us, there’s an important modification.

When five women missed the wedding for a short delay (they were asleep and weren’t watching or they would have seen their need of oil) Christ told His disciples that they didn’t understand, because it’s like a man traveling to a far country.

Israelites didn’t travel in winter, and if they took a long journey in spring and couldn’t get back for Passover, they were to keep it a month later according to Num 9:10,11.

Christ’s return invisibly as a thief in judgment at 2nd Passover should convince honest Jews that He was the Master who took the long journey (to heaven) and is returning at 2nd Passover according to His law.

The heads up sign (2019) should be the destruction of Jerusalem at 1st Passover which was the time of judgment for Egypt, Christ and Jerusalem when Titus came.
If we see Jerusalem destroyed then (Zech 14:1,2) we should give the message, “the Bridegroom comes” (Matt 25:6) because the King’s servant bid to the marriage in Matt 22:3-10.

      Hi Charles,
Thank you for the link and we agree on the key point, though I didn’t read every word.
For me, 1Cor 15;52 puts the rapture at the “last trumpet” which is at the end, Rev 11:15.
