Zwar sieht ein Mönch es nicht gern, wenn ein Kloster menschenleer da steht und kein klösterliches Leben in ihm wahrnehmbar ist. Doch mit der Tatsache, dass viele Cistercienserklöster eben “ehemalige” sind, muss man sich abfinden. Daher freut man sich, wenn die Inhalte klösterlichen Lebens gut vermittelt werden und – wenn sie schon Museen sind – gute Museen sind. In Walkrenried gibt es seit ca. 1550 keine Mönche mehr. Es wurde Schule, dann Steinbruch, dann Ruine.

Seit 2006 ist Walkenried ein Museum. Im Kapitelsaal ist heute eine evangelische Kapelle, wo der oben abgebildete Würfel steht; er will die Besucher auf das Schweigen aufmerksam machen. Nicht weit weg ist ein Stapel von Decken; daneben steht das Schild: Hüllt Euch in Schweigen. Diese Maßnahmen sind Versuche, Menschen auf das Wesentliche aufmerksam zu machen, um sie bei Führungen nicht ausschließlich mit Jahreszahlen und Kunstgattungen zu bombardieren. Eine ausgewogene Mischung beider Ansätze zu finden, ist gar nicht so einfach.
