Afterwards

I wrote these words thinking about the immediate future of worship and the Mass. I see the need to return and I am delighted that people are now able to receive the Lord in Holy Communion once more.

But I can’t shake of the feeling of how different it is, and how I wish, like us all, that the Coronavirus would just go away and not return! It is not a feeling of euphoria that I have at this moment, but of the reality of the situation we are in. Can we recover, with Christ, all things are possible. Can we take tentative steps into this brave new world…only time will tell. One thing that is constant through all this upheaval and change, is that Christ is truly present, and seeking his will is as important as it ever has been.

When people come to Mass at the moment it is different, if we can reconcile that and be at peace with it, then we will be able to take sure steps on the journey of faith.

Afterwards

Afterwards I sit alone, my thoughts conflict

The day is not yet done, the regulations restrict

On the one hand we are back, but on the other not so much

Masks cover,

concealing smiles,

smothering freedom,

instructions are followed

hand sanitisers replace holy water,

regulations dictate, we are sat apart, encouraged not to touch.

Life has changed, my heart wonders if it is forever

Will I ever again feel the embrace of a stranger or of another?

But I do not know the future, I can’t change the past, I have only now to negotiate with, to navigate through.

I hear the words the new normal and I shudder at this disinfected life view

I long for the fullness of returning

My little heart still has room for faith’s constant yearning.

For now, I sit and bow my head,

adoring the Lord present on the altar,

I proceed with caution,

trying to act simply, justly, gently, yes even humbly…

I pray for peace at the offertory,

that our praise my reach heaven

that my trusting heart does not fail within me
