New Year’s Toast

The old year is fading quickly, swiftly, rapidly exiting the building.

The new year arrives with shiny suitcase in hand,

proclaiming “Hey how are you all, so, what’s been happening?”

The old year does not leave via triumphant explosion.

Rather it skulks quietly away, leaving a trail of isolation, desolation, and tier filled devastation.

Tears of regret flood the city squares and spaces.

Which would normally be filled with cheerful, revelling faces.

Once, a year’s ending brought a joyful hue and cry.

This year remains silent,

ending with a whimper,

a collective, resentful, mournful sigh.

So, a toast to you, as we welcome a brand, New Year.

While reminiscing ruefully upon the passing of the old year.

“May you feel the soft wind on your back,

as the old year closes its door.

May the gentle breeze carry you forward,

your footsteps be steady,

may hope return, and life become secure once more.

The year 2020 is gone

May 2021 be a truly better one.”
