The Feast of Our Lady of Ransom
September 24 on the 1962 General Calendar commemorates the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St Peter Nolasco, confirming his mission to found a religious order that would ransom Christian captives. In the thirteenth century, Moors in Spain frequently abducted Christians and sold them into slavery. In response to this injustice, Saint Peter collaborated with Saint Raymund of Pennafort and King James I of Aragon to establish the Mercedarians, more formally known as the Order of Our Lady of Ransom or the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. The order included an office of Ransomer, a member designated to negotiate with slaveowners, and a fourth vow required by all members of the order to give oneself up as a hostage in Saracen territory if necessary to emancipate a Christian slave.
others from modern types of captivity, such as social, political, and psychological forms. They work in jails, marginal neighborhoods, among addicts, and in hospitals. In the United States, the Order of Mercy gives special emphasis to educational and parish work.[1]
And as the Order’s raison-d’etre has changed or evolved, so too has its fourth vow, which is now “to free from the new forms of slavery the Christians who are in danger of losing their Faith.”Devotion to Our Lady of Ransom has changed as well. She of course remains patron of the Mercedarian Order and of Barcelona, Spain, where the Order was first constituted. Sicily has a special devotion to Our Lady under this title because the island suffered much at the hands of the Saracens. And the most important Marian shrine in India is the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom in Vallarpardam, Kochi, in the region of Kerala.
Deus, qui per gloriosíssimam Fílii tui Matrem, ad liberándos Christi fidéles a potestáte paganórum, nova Ecclésiam tuam prole amplificáre dignátus es: præsta, quǽsumus; ut, quam pie venerámur tanti óperis institutrícem, eius páriter méritis et intercessíone, a peccátis ómnibus et captivitáte dæmónis liberémur. Per ejúsdem Dóminum.
O God, who through the most glorious Mother of Thy Son hast deigned to increase Thy Church through a new offspring for delivering Christ’s faithful from the power of the heathen: grant, we beseech, that we who piously venerate the founding of so great a work may, through its merits and intercession, be equally delivered from all sins and from the captivity of the demons. Through the same Christ our Lord.

Once again, I thank the New Liturgical Movement (Reporter) for this researched article on The Feast of Our Lady of Ransom. This article, by its explanation through the sentence “The changing missions and clients of the Mercedarians and Our Lady of Ransom remind us that it is sometimes possible and even necessary to put old wine into new wineskins, or at least to apply old devotions to new problems” gives me a clue to a twelve years mystery from which no one, even a priest-confessor, had told why I (this typing hand to be certain) “met Our Lady of Ransom” in a vivid dream, which telling of that unforgettable dream, brought me hostility from the part of some Catholics. I’ll use the safety of the internet anonymity to do the narrative, and then the summing-up from this to-day’s article’s explanation.
It was a dream. I approached a campfire, the only visible light in a dark night. Sitting by the campfire, were the Blessed Virgin Mary and a man with whom She was conversing. I knew that She was the BVM, but ignored who was the man in front of Her. The man stood-up and I sat where he had been, so I was in front of the Virgin, with the small camp-fire in between us.
Without any control of my own, I asked: “What do you do in heaven?”. She instantly replied: “We pray! we pray all the time!” My own thought, I confess, was of a disappointment, because, although I had began praying ‘seriously’ for nearly a decade already, praying was still a little chore to be done…

… My own thought, I confess, was of a disappointment, because, although I had began praying ‘seriously’ for nearly a decade already, praying was still a little chore to be done out of obedience for most of the time, and occasionally, if not very rarely, with some immense rewarding satisfactions. The Virgin, without giving me the time to express ‘disappointment’ at the prospect of spending the rest of the eternity in prayer in paradise, told: “It is nice. Heaven is nice.”
From that moment I ceased ‘saying a word’, and the rest of the dream consisted at listening and watching. She approached Her face to scrutinize my reaction after Her last sentence. This is when I saw the Virgin from very close. Her face was energetic. I could not distinguish the color of Her eyes but saw small wrinkles done when someone stares with intensity. Then She returned to Her sitting position. She was finger eating, then told: “in heaven we don’t have to eat, but when we descend on earth, we have to force ourselves (to eat)”.
Then, as of a ‘conclusion to this conversation’, She gave me Her hand to kiss. I kiss Her hand, and it did not feel like a dream: it was tactile. She turned Her head sideway while my lips were kissing Her hand, and this is when I saw Her from profile. She was royal, absolutely royal. She then stood-up, turned around and walked away in the dark. I saw Her sandal from under Her long dress and mantle, and then… I woke-up.
This is…

This is after waking-up, that I saw that dream occur on the morning of the feast day of ‘Our Lady of Ransom’, whom I totally ignored the existence. I took this dream seriously, to the point of telling some in the clergy, including even a bishop, because it gave me the impression that we stood at the eves of a great battle, and that Our Lady was to be present with us, and ‘down to earth’. It occur on September 24, 2010.
This to-day’s article at last gives me a clue: it is through prayers, and mostly only through prayers, as a form of paying a ransom, that one is delivered from the bondage of sin, which is the only bondage to fear. From this said dream, I became so impressed that I became a ‘praying soul’ ever since, me who had been under the most shameful of the slaveries issued from the sexual revolution of the 60′s.
This typing hand may also tell that in a total of twenty years of regular and constant prayers, the past twelve, since this strange dream at conversing with Our Lady of Ransom, I find it nicer & nicer to pray, hoping to continue praying for the rest of eternity in heaven.
Please forgive those tell-it-all lines, but this may be a grace received worth to be shared, which may be selfish to hide.
