Sausage Gravy Recipe

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This traditional southern breakfast dish has become fairly popular throughout the country because of the ease with which it can be cooked and its deliciousness.

Mostly served with homemade, buttermilk biscuits, sausage gravy is known to have roots during the Revolutionary War when people need high-calorie food which could be made from easily available ingredients.

Since biscuits were earlier baked as hard biscuits, the liquid of the gravy helped it become soft. In the present day, there is hardly a restaurant in the Southern United States that wouldn’t have this classic dish on their breakfast menu. The biscuits are no longer baked to be hard. They are mostly soft and flaky.

For your recipe, use good quality sausages which have a decent fat to lean ratio to make sure that your gravy turns out as delicious as you want it to be.

If it has too much fat, then you would end up sacrificing the texture and flavor of the gravy. Here is a simple recipe for sausage gravy which can be enjoyed with freshly baked biscuits.

Sausage Gravy

  • Author: Bobby

Ingredients
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 34 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper for seasoning

Instructions
  1. Use your hands to break the sausage into small pieces.
  2. Heat a large, heavy skillet and add the sausage bits to it. Keep stirring on high heat till it turns brown.
  3. Turn the flame down to medium heat and add half the flour. Stir the sausages so that the flour is soaked into the sausages.
  4. Keep adding the flour in small amounts and continue to stir so that the sausages can absorb the flour.
  5. Stir it for one more minute before adding the milk.
  6. Allow the gravy to cook on medium heat. It will take about 10 to 12 minutes for the gravy to thicken. Make sure you keep stirring in intervals so that the gravy does not stick.
  7. Season it with salt and freshly ground pepper.
  8. If you find the gravy to be too thick to your liking, then add some more milk to reach the right consistency. Our dish is ready to be served.
  9. Take a spoonful of the hot gravy and pour it over warm biscuits. You can also pour it over pancakes.
