Cornbread Recipe
Cornbread is a Native American cuisine made from dried and ground maize. The European explorers learnt the recipe from Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek and Choctaw tribes and soon it became famous across the world.
Here is an original cornbread recipe that will come out soft and fluffy if you follow the instructions as below:
Cornbread Recipe
- 1 cup yellow corn meal
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/4 cups whole milk/buttermilk
- 1 large egg at room temperature
- 3 tbsp unsalted melted butter
- 5 tbsp unsalted butter (for skillet/pan)
- An 8 or 9 inch baking pan would be perfect to bake the cornbread
- Baking time should be 20 minutes at 400°F
- Take a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and give it a good mix. You can then begin adding the other ingredients to this mixture one at a time.
- Begin with egg, 3 tbsp. of melted butter and whole milk or buttermilk.
- Mix till everything is combined well. You can use a whisk to do the job. If you are using your own measurement and find the mixture to be a bit thick and you can always add some whole milk or buttermilk to the batter.
- Pre-heat your over and along with it pre-heat the cast iron skillet that you are going to use to bake the cornbread in. Add 5 tbsp butter to the skillet and let it melt. Pour the batter into the skillet once the butter is completely melted.
- Put the skillet into your pre-heated oven and cook for 20 minutes at 400°F.
- Remove from the oven once the cooking time is over. You will find the sides of the cornbread have become golden and crispy.
- Cooking it with butter gives this beautiful texture to the cornbread and enhances the flavour too.
The cornbread is ready to serve. Cornbread is both tasty and healthy. You can enjoy the hot bread with your family at the dinner table and serve it with butter, jam, roasted chicken, baked beans or whatever you find it best goes with according to your taste.
Some may like cornbread on the sweet side while the others may prefer it salty. You can increase or decrease the quantity of sugar in the batter to make it sweeter or saltier. You can also substitute regular granulated sugar with brown sugar.
